Publication number: 20040202809Abstract: A process for extrusion blow molding an article, and an extrusion blow-molded article, in which a solid radially outwardly extending flange is blown into the tubular side wall of the article. A circumferentially extending groove is formed in the inner surface of the mold that molds the tubular side wall of the article. A parison of molten thermoplastic material is extruded and the parison is inflated by blowing to blow the parison against the walls of a mold. During inflation, the groove is filled by the molten thermoplastic material. The material that filled the groove forms a solid radially outwardly extending flange molded to the tubular side wall of the article. A portion of the article extending above the flange is severed in a single cutting step to form an article having an outward flange at its top end.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 29, 2004Publication date: October 14, 2004Applicant: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventors: Michael Kent Martin, Manson Drew Case

Publication number: 20040121891Abstract: A machine and process for forming a container are disclosed. In one method, at least one layer forming the container is directed to a first cutting device, which forms a cut at least partially through the at least one layer. A downstream second cutting device forms a cut at least partially through the at least one layer, such that the cuts cooperate to form a cut substantially the width of the at least one layer. By only cutting a portion of the at least one layer with the first cutting device, the machine can pull or direct the at least one layer therethrough, while the second cutting device cuts the remaining portions of the at least one layer so that the individual containers can be easily formed.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2002Publication date: June 24, 2004Applicant: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: Manson Drew Case

Patent number: 6675971Abstract: A composite container having a detachable liner and a method for making the container are provided according to the present invention. The method includes providing a tubular body ply formed of a paperboard material and adhering the liner ply using a standard adhesive applicator. The method also includes heating a heat-releasable adhesive disposed between the liner ply and the body ply such that the liner ply substantially releases from the body ply. The liner ply remains adhered to the opposed ends of the container, thus providing a free medial portion between the opposed ends that can move inwardly if a negative pressure is created within the sealed container, thus equalizing the pressure within the container with that outside the container.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2002Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: Manson Drew Case

Publication number: 20030178429Abstract: A composite container is provided for vacuum packaging of products is disclosed having a generally tubular body portion having opposite ends and an inner surface. A liner is attached to the body portion for receiving the products inside the liner and the body portion of the container. The liner has a memory and is able to move between a position adjacent the body portion to a position about the products placed therein when a vacuum is applied to the products. When the vacuum is removed from the products, the liner automatically returns from the position about the products to the position adjacent the body portion so that the products can be easily removed.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2002Publication date: September 25, 2003Applicant: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventors: Alan D. Williams, Drew Case, Veronique Sins

Patent number: 6558306Abstract: A multi-ply composite container for consumer products with at least one region of weakened strength and method for manufacturing same is provided. The composite container includes a multi-ply composite tube having a tubular body ply, a liner ply adhered to the inner surface of the tubular body ply and a label ply adhered to the outer surface of the body ply. The composite container also includes at least one circumferential score line in the multi-ply composite tube through the label ply and the body ply. The container and method overcome limitations imposed by conventional composite containers by providing a composite container which provides for easy opening, better consumer access, resealability, storage for left over food product, and easier consumer recycling.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2002Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventors: James W. Lowry, Manson Drew Case, Kenan J. Clougherty

Patent number: 6418822Abstract: A cut-off apparatus for non-circular tubes includes an axially movable carriage supporting one or more cutter assemblies and a drive system for driving the carriage synchronously with an advancing tubes. The advancing tube is received over a cutting mandrel mounted for movement with the carriage. The one or more cutter assemblies are disposed within the mandrel and comprise radially movable knives that are extended outward so as to cut the tube from the inside. The knives are urged radially outwardly by a cam moved by a control rod disposed within the mandrel. A clamp assembly is mounted on the carriage radially outwardly of the tube aligned with a cutter assembly, and includes clamp members that move inwardly to clamp the tube from the outside to restrain the tube against radially outward movement when being cut.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2000Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: Sonoco Development, Inc.Inventor: Manson Drew Case
