    Abstract: A system operable with a Digital Versatile/Video Disc source, provided with a scheme for preferably automatically pausing the playback of a DVD title when a user indicates that another activity is to be engaged. By automatically pausing the title playback, computational load on a processor subsystem associated with the system is minimized while graceful management of the additional video sources is effected. When the user switches to experiencing the DVD source as the primary source, the playback of the title is preferably automatically resumed.

    Abstract: A method and device for enhancing the sharpness of a video image. The luminance signal portion of a television signal is boosted in its upper frequency range, e.g., between about 2.0 MHz and about 4.25 MHz. This enhancement of the luminance signal accentuates the transitions between the high brightness levels and low brightness levels of the luminance signal. The resulting video image appears much sharper because this quicker transition reduces the amount of signal carrying intermediate brightness information.

    Abstract: A home entertainment appliance includes a computer system and a television system. A video monitor or television monitor of the home entertainment system shows a sequence of video frames generated in the appliance based upon at least one received sequence of interlaced video fields each containing a number of scan lines. A video system of the appliance receives a first field, temporarily stores the first field in an input buffer, and then in a loop, while video fields are being received, performs various other steps. The other steps include receiving a next field, compensating the field in the input buffer, deinterlacing the received field with the compensated field in the input buffer, temporarily storing the received field, merging the received field and the compensated field into a video frame of the second sequence, and providing the video frame of the second sequence to a subsequent device.

    Abstract: A computer system which provides emulation routines that cause a keyboard or mouse to appear present to the system software even when the devices are not physically installed. On system start up, this allows installation of appropriate device drivers by the operating system. If a keyboard or mouse is later installed, the emulation responses are discontinued, and a keyboard and mouse operate normally. When the system is placed in a standby state, the keyboard and mouse connectors are totally powered down. Before this power down, the BIOS routines save the configuration state of the keyboard and mouse as recorded by the emulation routines, which have been tracking commands sent to those devices even when those devices are operating. When power is reenabled to the keyboard and mouse connectors, the configuration of those devices is restored from that saved configuration data.

    Abstract: A computer system which utilizes a CMOS memory/RTC and does not have a separate battery for powering the CMOS memory/RTC. A serial EEPROM is utilized to maintain the contents of the CMOS memory. When the computer is entered into a setup mode and the CMOS information is to be saved, it is saved to both the CMOS memory and to the serial EEPROM. Upon booting up, a check is made to see if the CMOS memory has not lost data. If it has, then the copy stored in the serial EEPROM is retrieved and utilized. In a second embodiment, a flash EEPROM used to store the BIOS of the computer also stores this information. The flash EEPROM is a type where the EEPROM is divided into several partitions and each can be programmed independently of the others. The partition of the flash EEPROM used for the CMOS information is originally erased. The partition is sufficiently large to contain numerous copies of the CMOS data. Copies of the CMOS data are sequentially stored.
