Patent number: 9325018Abstract: The invention relates to primary electrochemical cells, in addition to methods for manufacturing and discharging the same, having a jellyroll electrode assembly that includes a positive electrode with a coating comprising iron disulfide deposited on a current collector situated on the outermost circumference of the jellyroll, a lithium-based negative electrode and a polymeric separator. More particularly, the invention relates to a cell design which optimizes cell capacity and substantially eliminates premature voltage drop-off on intermittent service testing by eliminating the edge effect through, for example, deliberately relieving stack pressure and/or extending the distance lithium ions proximate to the terminal end of the positive electrode must travel to undergo an electrochemical reaction in that region.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2014Date of Patent: April 26, 2016Assignee: ENERGIZER BRANDS, LLCInventors: Jack W. Patent number: 9048767Abstract: A pulse-width modulation (PWM) inverter controller compensates for harmonics in the output current provided by a PWM inverter to permanent magnet (PM) motor. The PWM inverter controller includes a field-oriented controller (FOC) that monitors output currents provided by the PWM inverter to the PM motor and employs the monitored output currents in a current loop feedback that generates control signals. A harmonic compensator transforms monitored phase currents into rectangular waveforms having magnitudes modified based on detected harmonics within the monitored phase currents to generate compensation signals. The compensation signals generated by the harmonic compensator are summed with the control signals generated by the FOC to generate compensated control signals. A PWM signal generator generates PWM signals for controlling the PWM inverter based on the compensated control signals.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2012Date of Patent: June 2, 2015Assignee: Hamilton Sundstrand CorporationInventors: Gregory I. Patent number: 8607076Abstract: Power-backup capabilities are provided by implementing a variety of different methods, systems and devices. According to one such implementation, a memory device stores data in response to data accesses under the control of a memory control circuit. A solid-state memory circuit and a volatile caching memory circuit provide the memory control circuit with access to a set of common data. A circuit carries primary operating power to the memory device. A backup power circuit has a power module having and securing a power-reservoir circuit. A capacitor holds a charge to provide operating power to the memory circuits to permit transfer of the data from the volatile memory circuit to the solid-state memory circuit. A notification circuit provides an external user indication of the power-reservoir circuit integrity. A circuit-based structure secures the power-reservoir circuit for operation as part of the memory device and facilitates replacement of the power-reservoir circuit.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2009Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Nathan Loren Lester, Duane James Farling

Publication number: 20130181654Abstract: An active rectifier controller controls operation of an active rectifier employed in a power conversion system that supplies a direct current (DC) output to an inverter that converts the DC output to an AC output supplied to an AC motor. The active rectifier controller includes a field-oriented control (FOC) controller that monitors an alternating current (AC) input currents provided to the active rectifier, the DC output provided to the inverter, and speed of the AC motor. The FOC controller selects a reference DC output value based on the speed of the AC motor and compares the monitored DC output to the reference DC output as part of the FOC control algorithm used to generate control signals. A PWM signal generator generates PWM signals for controlling the active rectifier based on the control signals.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 18, 2012Publication date: July 18, 2013Applicant: HAMILTON SUNDSTRAND CORPORATIONInventors: Gregory I. Rozman, Thomas A. Duclos, Duane A. James

Publication number: 20110211310Abstract: Various embodiments are generally directed to an apparatus that provides an interconnection with efficient data signal throughput. In some embodiments, a controller printed circuit board (PCB) supports a controller integrated circuit (IC) and a support bracket. A memory PCB is supported by the support bracket in a spaced apart, parallel relation to the controller PCB. The memory PCB supports at least one memory IC and has an edge connector which engages the support bracket. A flex circuit is provided that interconnects the edge connector to an interposer positioned on the controller PCB between the respective areal extent of the controller PCB and the memory PCB to form a data signal path between the memory IC and the controller IC.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 1, 2010Publication date: September 1, 2011Applicant: SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY LLCInventors: Duane James Farling, Nathan Loren Lester, Neal Frank Gunderson, Raymond Pavlak, JR.

Patent number: 5760876Abstract: In photographic equipment for reading magnetically recorded data on a film strip, gradual degradation of the read data signal caused, for example, by material buildup on the magnetic read head is detected by monitoring the read data signal to indicate when the signal falls below a normal signal level but is still above a minimum threshold at which data loss would result. Apparatus useful for this purpose includes first and second comparators for sensing the decline of the data signal level into a range falling between a first predetermined normal signal level threshold and a second lower predetermined signal level preferably at or slightly above minimum detectable signal level. With such an arrangement, even though data is still capable of being read and decoded, the operator of the data read equipment is given advance warning of the incipient read data problem sufficiently in advance of read failure condition to allow corrective action, e.g. cleaning of the read head, before actual data read failures occur.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1996Date of Patent: June 2, 1998Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Duane James Farling, Christopher Thomas Mattson
