  • Patent number: 6103050
Abstract: A method for slitting and sealing a lamination having a polyethylene layer and a coextruded film having a nylon.TM. layer. The improvement comprises slitting and sealing the two films with a laser generated light beam. The films are co-wound such that the coextruded film is closest to the laser. The laser slits the coextruded film first and thereafter the lamination. The polyethylene side of the lamination is positioned closest to the laser and is slit prior to other layers of the lamination. The method allows the polyethylene more time to absorb the energy from the laser and takes advantage of the efficient energy absorbing characteristics of the nylon.TM. in the coextruded film, resulting in improved slitting and sealing rates.

  • Patent number: 6066376
Abstract: A high-barrier non-foil laminate composition is disclosed. The laminate composition comprises an outer heat stable layer, a barrier layer, and an inner layer that readily adheres to metal with the application of heat. The outer and inner layers may be bonded to the barrier layer by means of adhesive layers. Preferably, the outer layer comprises a material with a higher melting temperature than the inner layer such as polyethylene terephthalate. The barrier layer may be a high-barrier saran and the sealant layer may be a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid.

  • Patent number: 4617240
Abstract: A novel coextruded plastic film has as an adhesive layer between polypropylene and nylon layers, a blend of polypropylene and a graft copolymer of maleic anhydride onto a polypropylene backbone, the graft copolymer having been produced in a reaction carried out at a temperature of from about 80.degree. C. up to about 10.degree. C. below the melting point of the polypropylene.

  • Patent number: 4588648
Abstract: A novel coextruded plastic film has, as an adhesive layer between polypropylene and nylon layers, a blend of polypropylene and a graft copolymer of maleic anhydride onto an olefin polymer or copolymer, the adhesive blend containing from about 0.005% to 0.75% maleic anhydride based on the total weight of the entire blend composition.

  • Patent number: 4402172
Abstract: This invention is a novel laminate, and a process for making a laminate packaging material suitable for use with food in a retort environment. In the first step, polypropylene is coextruded with an anhydride modified polypropylene. In the second step the modified polypropylene is adhered to unprimed metal foil in a hot combining nip. In the third and final step, the surface of the foil opposite the surface affixed to the modified polypropylene is adhesively laminated to a biaxially oriented polymer.
