  • Patent number: 7955570
Abstract: Highly active, low pressure drop catalyst systems. Catalytically active material is provided on at least a portion of the channel sidewalls of a body comprising one or more flow-through channels. The channel sidewalls preferably bear a charge, e.g., an electrostatic or electret charge, to help adhere the catalytically active material to the sidewall. The catalytically active material preferably includes gold provided on a particulate support, and PVD techniques are used to deposit catalytically active gold onto the support. Optionally, the gold-bearing particulates may be charged as well in a manner to facilitate attraction between the particulates and the sidewalls.

  • Publication number: 20110094514
Abstract: A sensor 40 that detects a chemical such as an organic vapor. The sensor 40 includes a film that has a film body 58 that includes a detection layer 48 and that is responsive to the presence of a chemical by providing a color change. The film also includes an occluding layer 54 that has a first major surface 59 and that is bound to the film body 58 but is inert to the detection layer 48 to preclude the occluding layer 54 and the chemical from causing a color change in the film body 58 in an area 42 normal to the first major surface 59 of the occluding layer 54. A sensor having this construction can provide a distinctly visible image on the sensor, which may be helpful in evaluating the remaining life of a filter cartridge.

  • Publication number: 20100273091
Abstract: The present invention provides technology for controlling, or tuning, the catalytic activity of gold provided upon nanoporous supports such as those derived from nanoparticulate titania. It has been discovered that the nature of the surfaces of the nanoparticles used to support a nano-metal catalyst, such as catalytically active gold, has a profound effect upon the catalytic properties of the supported catalyst. The support surface may be altered as desired to control the activity of the gold. The present invention teaches how thermal treatment of nanoparticulate media incorporated into a nanoporous support prior to deposition of catalytically active gold dramatically suppresses the ability of a resultant catalyst system to oxidize hydrogen. Yet, the system still readily oxidizes CO.

  • Publication number: 20100240799
Abstract: An antimicrobial film-forming composition, an antimicrobial film, and a method of verifying the presence of an antimicrobial film. The film-forming composition can include no greater than 10 weight percent of polyvinyl alcohol, from 0.05 to 15 weight percent of polyhexamethylene biguanide, from 0.001 to 10 weight percent of a quaternary ammonium compound, and water or a water-based solvent. The film-forming composition can form a water-soluble, biocidal antimicrobial film that includes no greater than 98 weight percent of polyvinyl alcohol, and from 1 to 15 weight percent of each of polyhexamethylene biguanide and the quaternary ammonium compound. The method can include applying a film-forming composition comprising an indicator dye to a surface, drying the film-forming composition to form an antimicrobial film, and triggering the antimicrobial film to trigger the indicator dye to verify the presence of the film.

  • Publication number: 20100047142
Abstract: Filter media containing an impregnant obtained by pre-reacting an amine functional material with a transition metal to form an amine-metal coordination complex. The complexed amine is much more compatible with amine sensitive co-impregnants or amine sensitive substrates. Additionally, even though the amine is complexed, the impregnant retains high activity for the removal of cyano-containing vapors and other contaminants for which amines have a filtering efficacy. Advantageously, therefore, the filter media may be used to remove cyano-containing vapors or other amine-targeted contaminants from air and other harmful gases in the presence of metal-based catalysts (such as those catalysts comprising platinum, gold or other active transition metals) without the undesirable effect of unduly inhibiting or poisoning the metal-based catalysts.
