    Abstract: An improved assembly for a liquid crystal display of the polarized light shutter type is obtained by applying to the facing surfaces of transparent parallel plates, between which a layer of liquid crystal material is disposed, a material selected from the group consisting of water soluble polymers and polyvinyl acetal resins which facilitate unidirectional rubbing of the facing surfaces of the plates to produce a twisted nematic structure.
