  • Publication number: 20090084849
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for reading indicia comprising a programmable scanning system (10) capable of reading a first object (18) scanned by the apparatus. The first object (18) initiates a program (24) internal to the apparatus providing a verb configuration indicating the type of programming actions to be taken by the apparatus. The programmable scanning system (10) is capable of reading a second object (26) scanned by the apparatus. The second object is decoded by internal circuitry of the scanning system (10) to provide a symbology type. The program (24) is selectively formatted by the first object (18) to read or not read the verb configuration of the symbology type of the second object (20) in target objects to be read.

  • Publication number: 20090078773
Abstract: An imaging-based bar code reader that includes an imaging and decoding system. Focusing optics and a sensor array define a field of view. An exemplary system has an image sensor includes multiple configuration registers. With multiple configuration registers a video mode can be implemented where the video consists of a continuous sequence of frames with a fixed sequence a number of configurations. The configurations can vary the frame size, exposure time, gain, etc. Compared to a sensor with only one set of configuration registers, successive frames can be captured with different configurations without synchronization issues or frame lag.

  • Publication number: 20080290169
Abstract: The disclosed bar code reader includes an auto-focusing component for rapidly producing in focus images. An imaging system makes use of an aiming pattern that impinges upon the coded indicia of a target. The imaging system includes a light monitoring pixel array and a focusing lens that is fixed with respect to the pixel array for transmitting an image of the target object onto the pixel array. The imaging system also includes a movable mirror mounted for movement along a path of travel to reflect light passing through the focusing lens onto the pixel array. A drive motor moves the mirror relative the lens to adjust a focus of an image of the object formed at the pixel array. An automatic focusing component of the imaging system analyzes the aiming pattern reflected from the target object and projected onto the pixel array by the lens.

  • Patent number: 7455231
Abstract: Described is a method of locating a predetermined pattern. An image is divided into a predetermined number of areas. A search sequence indicative of an order in which the areas are to be analyzed for the predetermined pattern is determined. The areas in the search sequence are analyzed until either a predetermined time elapses or the predetermined pattern is detected. When the predetermined time has elapsed before the predetermined pattern is detected, a further image is obtained. Then, areas remaining in the sequence are analyzed in the further image beginning with an area to be analyzed immediately after a last analyzed area of the image until either the predetermined time elapses or the predetermined pattern is detected in one of the remaining areas.

  • Publication number: 20080204669
Abstract: A lightweight, compact image projection module has a laser package having a common exit port, and a plurality of lasers mounted in the package and operative for emitting a plurality of laser beams of different wavelengths through the common exit port. An optical assembly focuses the laser beams exiting the common exit port, and includes a common focusing lens through which the laser beams pass along respective paths that are in angular misalignment. An optical corrector element in at least one of the paths corrects the misalignment to produce aligned beams. A scanner sweeps the aligned beams in a pattern of scan lines, each scan line having a number of pixels. A controller causes selected pixels to be illuminated, and rendered visible, by the aligned beams to produce the image.

  • Patent number: 7395970
Abstract: A bar code scanning system and method for reading and processing bar code symbology uses a scanning station installed above the check-out stand and a receiving station at some distance away from the scanning station. The scanning station projects light onto a surface of the check-out stand. The projected light can have a well defined border indicating where a user should place items to be scanned. Alternatively, a pattern coincident with the projected light can be projected onto the surface and which includes a target indicating where items should be placed for scanning. Light reflected by items in the target region is processed to decode optical symbology on the item and produce a signal that is representative of said sensed symbology. Information about the scanned item can be processed and displayed by the receiving station for use in, e.g., a point-of-sale transaction.

  • Patent number: 7337970
Abstract: A two dimensional symbol is decoded by forming a sub-sampled image that is used to generate symbol margins for use in digitization. The sub-sampled image is based on local levels of contrast in the symbol. By using a sub-sampled image derived from local levels of contrast in the symbol to determine the symbol margins, margins can be located efficiently and in the presence of symbol contrast variation caused by irregularities in the marked surface or light source angles. Digitization proceeds based on the determined margins.
