  • Patent number: 4279238
Abstract: A woodburning heating apparatus capable of horizontal and updraft combustion has removable elements positioned within a relatively small enclosed volume to provide efficient and reliable operation in either combustion mode. The removable elements include the wear plates, fireback, and damper assembly. The wear plates and fireback define primary, secondary, and night air supplies for the apparatus. An articulated damper control mechanism provides resistance against impinging combusted gases in at least one position of the damper. The damper construction allows, in either the horizontal or updraft combustion modes, the provision of both top exiting and rear exiting flue connections. Baffles are provided at the combusted gas exit from the primary combustion chamber to uniformly spread the combusted gases exiting the primary chamber over a substantial volume so that localized heating of the apparatus does not occur.

  • Patent number: 4249509
Abstract: An improved wood burning apparatus and method having increased secondary combustion are disclosed. Unburned combustibles from a primary combustion chamber are combined with an oxygen containing gas, such as air, and thereafter pass through a selectively operated electrical heating element which promotes secondary combustion. The combustion products from the secondary combustion are monitored so that if secondary combustion is not sufficiently complete, the heating element is activated to promote increased secondary combustion thereby providing an increased overall efficiency for the heating apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4221207
Abstract: A wood-burning heating apparatus, used as a parlor stove, and providing a significant heat output is disclosed. The stove has primary and secondary combustion chambers and a baffling arrangement for directing flue gases along a circuitous path to the exit aperture whereby a significant proportion of the heat of said gases is given up to the apparatus. A vertically oriented downwardly directed baffle separates the combustion chambers. Primary and secondary air paths supply air to the primary and secondary combustion chambers respectively. Each of the supply conduits is pre-heated and the secondary air supply provides oxygen substantially evenly around an opening at a bottom portion of the baffle to increase the efficiency of secondary combustion. The apparatus is further provided with a self-clearing top smoke chamber having a pivotable top cover. A rotatable flue collar is provided for either a horizontal or a vertical connection to the exit flue.
