Abstract: The present invention is concerned with providing security substrates, and documents made therefrom, such as banknotes, with features for visual inspection by members of the public. More specifically the invention relates to a novel security substrate containing at least two elongate security elements for the purposes of public and non-public verification. The security substrate comprises a substrate and at least two elongate security elements each having a width of less than or equal to 6 mm. The security elements are at least partially embedded within the substrate and running substantially parallel to each other with a gap therebetween of no greater than 10 mm. The total cross-directional width of a zone occupied by the two security elements and the gap is less than or equal to 18 mm.

Abstract: The invention therefore comprises a security substrate (11) comprising a fibrous substrate and a security device (10) The security device (10) comprises an at least partially light transmissive polymeric carrier layer bearing a first security feature and the substrate being provided with a second security feature. The first and second security features are formed and located relative to each other such that, when one side of the security substrate (11) is viewed in transmitted light the first and second security features visually combine to form a first composite image, which is not seen in reflected light.

Abstract: Paper incorporating a wide elongate impermeable element with regions at least partially exposed at one surface of the paper at two sets of windows at spaced locations has its windows formed by two sets of raised portions on the support surface of the papermaking machine. A first set of raised portions has a width transverse to the machine direction in which the paper travels during manufacture which is narrower than the width of the elongate element. A second set of raised portions has a width transverse to the machine direction which is at least equal to the width of the elongate element. During manufacture of the paper the elongate element is brought into contact with both sets of raised portions, with edges of the elongate element being supported by the second set of raised portions.

Abstract: A document of value such as a banknote comprises a substrate having a security feature in or on one region of the substrate. The security feature has at least one machine authenticatable high security entity (HSE) and at least one further machine authenticatable entity comprising a low security entity (LSE) or a high security entity, the at least two entites providing different detectable characteristics. The or each HSE is an homogeneous mixture of at least two components exhibiting different detectable characteristics, and the LSE is a single component exhibiting a detectable characteristic different from those exhibited by the HSE.
