    Abstract: Disclosed is a functional NIRS imaging system including an elastomeric cap, a set of transmit optical fibers and a set of receive optical fibers terminating on the inside surface of the elastomeric cap. A pair of light sources combines to produce a collimated light beam at two wavelengths. An optical modulation system, converts the light beam into a plurality of probe light beams, modulates the plurality of probe light beams and directs each probe light beam into a transmit fiber. An optical detection system accepts scattered photons from subcutaneous tissue underneath the elastomeric cap as a plurality of collected light beams and converts them into a time series of electronic images, stores the electronic images into the memory and processes the electronic images using. The system displays the resulting image on a display as a hemoglobin oxygen saturation map.

    Abstract: An optically-based rigid-body 6-DOF motion tracking system optimized for prospective (real-time) motion correction in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) applications using a single camera with an on-board image processor, an IR illuminator and optical fiducial targets affixed to a patient. An angle extraction algorithm operated by the on-board image processor utilizes successive approximation to solve the 3-point pose problem for angles close to the origin to achieve convergence to sub-microradian levels. A motion alarm is enabled by a monitor and GUI application in communication with the motion tracking system. A motion correction is enabled for MR scan images taken while operating the motion tracking system wherein an MRI controller is in communication with the motion tracking system.

    Abstract: The present invention relates, in general, to the field of motion tracking, and in particular to join a target in an MRI application. In particular the invention teaches an apparatus and method to track the movement of a target during medical imaging scanning using optical technology. Optical systems record the position and movement of the pattern and are able to perform mathematical analysis of the pattern to determine the positional shift of the patient. Weighted averages, Fourier transforms, Hadamard matrices and cross-correlation of data related to X-Y translation, rotation and scaling of the image of the pattern are used to analyze movement of the subject's head. Feedback related to the movement is provided to the MRI machine which allows for adjustments in focusing coils for real time tracking of the patient's movements during the MRI procedure. As a result, the MRI procedure becomes more accurate as it is adjusted for the patient's movements.
