Publication number: 20120101320Abstract: A process to prepare an olefin from its corresponding alcohol is improved by reacting, under reaction conditions including a first temperature, an aliphatic alcohol and, optionally, diluent water, to form a reaction product including at least a dialkyl ether. The product is then reacted again, under higher temperature to complete the dehydration of the dialkyl ether to the desired olefin. This process is particularly suitable to prepare ethene from ethyl alcohol. The stepped temperature scheme serves to reduce the formation of byproduct aldehydes, which in turn reduces coke formation, fouling, and the need to handle large amounts of water, thereby lowering energy and capital costs.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2010Publication date: April 26, 2012Inventors: Mark William Stewart, Howard W. Clark, Duncan Paul Coffey, Lin Luo, Albert E. Schweizer, JR.

Patent number: 8162098Abstract: An acoustic reflector suitable for use as a reflective target for navigational aids and for location and re-location applications. The acoustic reflector comprises a shell arranged to surround a solid core. The shell is adapted to transmit acoustic waves incident thereon into the core. Within the core the acoustic waves are focused before being reflected from an opposing side of the shell to provide a reflected acoustic wave. The shell has at least two areas of transmissibility such that the waves incident on the shell follow separate paths within the core before being re-radiated and combining constructively to provide an enhanced reflected acoustic wave at one or more pre-determined frequencies.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2009Date of Patent: April 24, 2012Assignee: The Secretary of State for DefenceInventors: David Emery, Duncan Paul Williams, John Darren Smith

Patent number: 8077539Abstract: An acoustic reflector (10) suitable for use as a reflective target for navigational aids and for location and re-location applications. The acoustic reflector comprises a shell (12) arranged to surround a solid core (16). The shell is adapted to transmit acoustic waves (18) incident thereon into the core (16). Within the core the acoustic waves are focused before being reflected from an opposing side of the shell (20) to provide a reflected acoustic wave. A portion of the acoustic waves incident on the shell is coupled into the shell wall and guided within and around the circumference thereof (26) before being re-radiated and combining constructively with the reflected acoustic wave to provide an enhanced reflected acoustic wave.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2006Date of Patent: December 13, 2011Assignee: The Secretary of State for DefenceInventors: John Darren Smith, David Emery, Duncan Paul Williams

Publication number: 20110096183Abstract: Images of foreground objects in a scene are generated by causing electromagnetic radiation to be emitted having a first spectral power distribution from a surface of a first foreground object, which is adjacent or at least partially obscured by a second foreground object. A first image of both of the first and second foreground objects is acquired whilst the first foreground object emits electromagnetic radiation with the first spectral power distribution. A second image of the first and second foreground objects is acquired whilst the first foreground object is not emitting electromagnetic radiation or is emitting electromagnetic radiation with a second spectral power distribution which is different to the first spectral power distribution. An alpha matte of the first and second foreground objects is generated based on a comparison of the first image and second image.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2010Publication date: April 28, 2011Applicant: METAIL LIMITEDInventor: Duncan Paul ROBERTSON

Patent number: 7894386Abstract: A satellite telephone system for communication between a fixed network (4) and a moveable network (1) on board a vehicle, has means for suspending operation of the moveable network, for example when the moveable network could interfere with a fixed network, during safety-critical stages of a flight, or to enforce “quiet” periods on board. When operation of the moveable network (1) is suspended a control signal is transmitted to the fixed network (4), causing the fixed network (4) to intercept calls directed to the moveable network, thereby avoiding unnecessary signal traffic over the satellite link (3, 6, 13). The moveable network may be a wireless network (FIGS. 1, 2), or a wired network (FIG. 4).Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2007Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Assignee: Stratos Global LimitedInventors: Matthew Alexander Clarke, Duncan Paul Balmbra

Patent number: 7286503Abstract: Apparatus for providing telephone connection between one or more cellular radio telephones and a cellular radio switching system, comprises at least one moveable base transceiver station (511) for providing a radio connection with the cellular radio telephones, and having means for detecting whether the moveable base transceiver stations are in range of a fixed base transceiver station (543), and means for controlling the output of the moveable base transceiver stations (511) when such a fixed base transceiver station is detected such that transmissions from the moveable base stations do not interfere with transmissions from the fixed base station within a predetermined area surrounding the fixed base station (543). The system may also include a position finding system (590, 591), linked to the output control such that transmissions from the transmitter (511) cannot be detected within a predetermined area (T).Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2000Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Stratos Global LimitedInventors: Matthew Alexander Clarke, Duncan Paul Balmbra
