  • Patent number: 5143787
Abstract: Magnetic recording media wherein the record surface is coated with an isocyanate lubricant (and, preferably, a supercoat of like lubricant), such lubrication being adapted to inhibit spin-off and like depletion, despite frequent head-contact, while exhibiting good durability, wear resistance and recording characteristics over extended life (computer applications).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 27, 1989
Date of Patent: September 1, 1992
    Assignee: Unisys Corp.
Inventors: Duncan W. Frew, Robert P. Shadwick

  • Patent number: 4717493
Abstract: A magnetic coating composition is disclosed of the type having magnetic particles dispersed in a resin binder. The improvement comprises the use of a solvent system including a dibasic ester wherein the solvent system has an initial Hansen three-dimensional solubility parameter range of approximately 10.5 to 11.0 and a Hansen three-dimensional solubility parameter range of approximately 9.3 to 10.0 after approximately 99% of the solvent has been evaporated from the binder.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 3, 1986
Date of Patent: January 5, 1988
    Assignee: Unisys Corporation
Inventors: Duncan W. Frew, Zorro Stefanini, Edward A. Schnee, Leo di Ricco
  • Patent number: 4547534
Abstract: The present invention is a method to disperse fine solids in a resin binder matrix by use of a sand mill having non-metallic discs and containing zirconium oxide milling media. The method of the invention will disperse the fine solids without reduction of the size of the fine solids or contamination to the dispersion by fines of the zirconium oxide milling media.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 3, 1984
Date of Patent: October 15, 1985
    Assignee: Memorex Corporation
Inventors: Leo di Ricco, Edward Schnee, Zorro Stefanini, Duncan W. Frew

  • Patent number: 4092256
Abstract: A coating composition for use in the preparation of magnetic recording media is described. The composition contains finely divided magnetic particles dispersed in an organic solvent, containing in solution a hydroxyl group containing polymer having an OH number between about 100-500, a polyether urethane elastomer, an aliphatic polyisocyanate and a copper containing chelate catalyst, the organic portion of said chelate being of the general chemical structure ##STR1## wherein R and R' can be the same or different and represent alkyl groups containing 1-18 carbon atoms and aromatic groups, both substituted and unsubstituted.
