The inner surface of the side wall includes a curved bearing surface that is configured to contact a spherical bearing by including a curvature that is oriented substantially axially.

    Abstract: A socket joint includes a stud, a wear indicator configured to indicate a degree of wear relating to the stud or relating to a position of the stud, an elastomeric seal, and a Belleville washer. The elastomeric seal is located at least partially between the wear indicator and the Belleville washer. In some implementations, a domed cover plate is configured to help create a sealing engagement between the elastomeric seal, the wear indicator, and the Belleville washer when the cover plate is pressed into the internal bore of the housing of the socket joint.

    Abstract: A socket joint and method of manufacture where a sealing ring is used to seat a fully elastomeric flange of a dust boot. The sealing ring has a planar sealing surface that extends between an inner diameter edge and an outer diameter edge, and the planar sealing surface rests against the elastomeric top edge of the flange and the inner diameter edge rests against a stud of the socket joint to seat the dust boot and seal the assembly. The housing of the socket joint includes a number of features within the internal bore to improve manufacturing and enhance the interference fit of the sealing ring.

    Abstract: A socket joint having an offset housing configuration and reduced stud diameter can improve steering performance while being able to mate with standard vehicle components. In one implementation, the joint has an offset configuration along with a spherical bearing, where a central housing axis is radially offset from a central stud axis. With the offset configuration, the size of the stud is smaller than with typical joints. In one embodiment, a ratio of the housed stud diameter to the housing outer diameter is between 1:1.5 and 1:2.72. In some implementations, there is a transition surface between the housed stud portion and an attachment stud portion on the stud. One or more helical oil grooves may be located between the transition surface and a retaining ring groove. The retaining ring groove can be used to situate a retaining ring that holds the stud assembly together.

    Abstract: A ball joint includes a cover plate with a nested portion along an outer perimeter having a nested portion thickness, a domed portion located radially inward of the outer perimeter having a domed portion thickness, and a pressed portion located between the nested portion and the domed portion having a pressed portion thickness. The pressed portion thickness is less than the domed portion thickness, which during manufacture, is formed when the cover plate and bearing are simultaneously pressed into their final form and position. A tool can be used to press the cover plate and bearing in a single operation. The tool can have interchangeable components, allowing for the manufacture of differently sized ball joints.

The bolt has a head, a shaft extending from the head and a stud extending between the shaft is included. The shaft has a first diameter and the stud has second diameter less than the first diameter such that a ledge extends between the shaft and the stud. The bushing is compressed a predefined by the bolt when the bolt extends through the bushing and the ledge of the bolt abuts against the flange of the shank.
