    Abstract: The disclosure reveals a computer vision technique to measure flank and crater wear of a single point cutting tool. This direct tool wear measurement method uses a microscope mounted camera to acquire an image of the tool. Special lighting of a face of the tool shows contrast of the wear region in the image. The image analysis is based on an interactive procedure utilizing a general purpose image processing system. A computer program calculates ten parameters to characterize flank and crater wear.

    Abstract: Seals in an automotive body are inspected for leaks by sensing ultrasonic energy passing through a seal. Either of an ultrasonic emitter or detector is scanned along a seal outside the body by a robot and the other is inside the body. The emitter operates at frequencies of 65 to 80 kHz and repetitively sweeps through a range of 6 kHz. The body may be either open or closed.

    Abstract: An acoustic inspection method is disclosed for determining in a catalytic converter monolith substrate whether a ceramic coating was applied in a predetermined amount and uniformly to the surface of exhaust gas passages extending therethrough and whether the ceramic coating is blocking any of the passages. The method includes mounting the substrate in an acoustically sealed structure so as to form a throat communicating a speaker at an entrance end of the coated passages with an empty resonator cavity at an exit end of the coated passages and thereby form a Helmholtz resonator. The speaker is then driven to produce a continuous sound wave through the coated passages into the resonator cavity at a predetermined frequency approximately the natural frequency of the resonator to thereby produce oscillatory sound waves through the coated passages at the same frequency. The substrate is then reversely mounted and the previous step is repeated.

    Abstract: A compact exhaust silencer especially for use in diesel locomotives having a single exhaust outlet located in relatively close proximity to the roof of the engine hood. The silencer includes an offset duct having dual oppositely curved ninety degree bends, leading to a roof outlet opening and providing broadband high frequency sound level reduction, combined with a compact Helmholtz cavity-type resonator. The resonator consists of a chamber mounted near the first bend in the direction opposite the main duct offset and a connector tube extending from the side of the duct downwardly into the chamber and tuned with the cavity to the sound frequency at which maximum silencing is desired, preferably the predominant firing frequency in the engine noise spectrum at full speed and load.
