  • Patent number: 4431782
Abstract: Sulfonium-stabilized, water-compatible, radiation-curable vinyl ester resins are prepared by the process of reacting an epoxy resin having on the average at least one vicinal epoxy group with a mercaptan and with an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid to form vinyl ester resins containing sulfide moieties which are then reacted with a protonic acid and an alkylene oxide.Compounds so prepared can be diluted with water and used as coatings.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 7, 1983
Date of Patent: February 14, 1984
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Robert F. Harris, Dwight K. Hoffman
  • Patent number: 4431754
Abstract: A low viscosity copolymer polyahl dispersion is prepared by polymerizing polymer particles in a polyahl medium, to a first solids concentration and thereafter diluting the dispersion to a second lower solids concentration. The resulting diluted dispersion has a lower viscosity than if the dispersion were prepared directly at the lower solids level. The invention has particular advantage when used with "all acrylonitrile" dispersions. The copolymer polyahl dispersions are useful in the manufacture of urethane and isocyanurate foams.

  • Patent number: 4394491
Abstract: An adduct of a monoahl, e.g., a monohydroxyl polyalkylene oxide, and an active ethylenically unsaturated isocyanate, e.g., 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, is usefully employed in the preparation of stable copolymer dispersions of the type used in the production of polyurethane foams and polyurethane elastomers. The copolymer dispersion is prepared by addition copolymerization of (1) the adduct with (2) ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), e.g., styrene or mixture thereof with acrylonitrile, while (1) and (2) are dispersed or dissolved in an excess of an active hydrogen polyfunctional compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 8, 1980
Date of Patent: July 19, 1983
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company

  • Patent number: 4390645
Abstract: A stable copolymer dispersion is prepared by addition copolymerization of (1) an adduct of an active hydrogen compound, e.g., a polyether polyol, and an active ethylenically unsaturated isocyanate, e. g., 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate with (2) ethylenically unsaturated monomers(s), e.g., styrene or mixture thereof with acrylonitrile, while (1) and (2) are dispersed or dissolved in an excess of an active hydrogen polyfunctional compound. The resulting dispersion has a controlled particle size and a viscosity such that it is suitably employed in the production of polyurethane foams.

  • Patent number: 4338232
Abstract: Novel sulfonium-stabilized, radiation-curable, water-compatible, water-in-oil emulsions and a method of preparation are described. As an example, one such emulsion was prepared by reacting the diglycidyl ether of a polypropylene glycol with essentially a stoichiometric equivalent of acrylic acid, about 0.3 equivalent of bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-sulfide and 1.5 equivalents of H.sub.2 O.

  • Patent number: 4320221
Abstract: The reaction product of an ethylenically unsaturated, monofunctional isocyanate, such as isocyanatoethyl methacrylate and a difunctional active hydrogen containing compound such as a polyol is useful as an anaerobic adhesive.
