  • Publication number: 20130156483
Abstract: A method and apparatus of securing and tensioning a printing form in an apparatus having a rotatable drum includes securing a first portion of the printing form to a first means for receiving that is coupled to a surface of the drum, and securing a second portion of the printing form to a second means for receiving that is disposed on a rotatable member that extends over a portion of the drum. The rotatable member is rotated so that the circumferential distance between the first receiving means and the second receiving means is about the same as a length of the printing form. A rotary torque means is coupled to the rotatable member to apply a substantially constant torque on the member and tension the printing form about the surface of the drum. The rotary torque means adjusts torque on the member which adjusts tension on the printing form.

  • Publication number: 20130141713
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for controlling the metallic gloss of a coating resulting from a coating composition, such as automotive OEM or refinish paint, that contains flakes, such as metallic aluminum flakes. Thus, by adjusting the amount of flattener added to the coating composition, the gloss of a coating resulting therefrom can be controlled from glossy to flat (matte) finish. The process includes measuring reflectance (L-value) of a layer of the coating composition applied over a test substrate by using gloss prediction device of the present invention. The metallic gloss of a coating resulting from the layer is then measured. The process is repeated with varying amounts of one or more flatteners added to the composition and the metallic gloss vs. reflectance is plotted on a graph. Then by means of a curve fitting equation, a metallic gloss prediction curve is plotted.

  • Publication number: 20130141727
Abstract: The process includes measuring flops of a layer of the coating composition applied over a test substrate of a mottling prediction device of the present invention at the start and then after a desired time interval. A delta flop is determined by subtracting from the flop at the start from that after the desired time interval and a degree of mottling of a coating resulting from the layer is visually assessed. The process is repeated with varying amounts of one or more rheology additives added to the composition and the degree of mottling vs. delta flop is plotted on a graph and then by using a curve fitting equation, a mottling prediction curve is obtained. By measuring the delta flop of a wet layer of a target coating composition, the degree of mottling in the target coating composition can then be predicted by using the mottling prediction curve.

  • Publication number: 20130141724
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for predicting the tint strength of a pigmented coating composition, such as automotive OEM or refinish paint, on a real time basis while it is being made. The tint strength of a coating resulting from a layer, obtained by adding a reference binder to the coating composition, is measured. The process is repeated by subjecting the coating compositions to successive grinding intervals. The tint strength vs. reflectance is plotted on a graph and then by using a curve fitting equation, a tint strength prediction curve is obtained. By measuring the reflectance of a wet layer of a target coating composition, the tint strength of that target coating composition can then be predicted by using the tint strength prediction curve. The process is most useful during the manufacture of coating compositions, such as automotive OEM and refinishes paints.
