    Abstract: A method of dimethyl carbonate production includes reacting CO2 and methanol in the presence of a heteroatom-modified cerium oxide catalyst to form dimethyl carbonate. The heteroatom-modified cerium oxide catalyst includes an element selected from the group consisting of N, S and combinations thereof, in an amount ranging from 0.05 to 2 wt. % based on the total weight of the heteroatom-modified cerium oxide catalyst. The heteroatom-modified cerium oxide catalyst is in the form of nanorods with an average diameter in a range from 1 to 50 nm and an average length in a range from 10 to 700 nm. The dimethyl carbonate yield is greater than or equal to 40 mmol·gcatalyst?1.
