Publication number: 20070106322Abstract: An embolic protection device has a collapsible filter element (105) mounted on a carrier such as a guidewire (101). The filter element (105) collapses into the outer end of a catheter (118) for deployment and retrieval through a vascular system of a patient. The filter element (105) has a collapsible filter body with a proximal inlet end and a distal outlet end. The proximal inlet end has inlet openings sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body. The outlet end has outlet openings which allow through passage of blood but retain embolic material within the filter body. After use, the catheter (118) is movable along the guidewire (101) to engage the proximal end of the filter element and close the inlet openings before sliding over the filter element from the proximal end to the distal end to progressively collapse the filter body on the guidewire (101) for retrieval.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2006Publication date: May 10, 2007Inventors: Paul GILSON, Eamon Brady, Padraig Maher, David Vale, Charles Taylor

Publication number: 20070060945Abstract: A collapsible filter element for a transcatheter embolic protection device, the filter element comprises a collapsible filter body of polymeric material which is movable between a collapsed stored position for movement through a vascular system and an expanded position for extension across a blood vessel such that blood passing through the blood vessel is delivered through the filer element. A proximal inlet portion of the filter body has one or more inlet openings sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body. A distal outlet portion of the filter body has a plurality of generally circular outlet openings sized to allow through-passage of blood, but to retain embolic material within the filter body. The distal outlet portion of the filter body in the region of the outlet openings has means for reducing shear stress on blood passing through the outlet openings. The shear stress reducing means includes lead-in and lead-out radiussed portions of the filter body leading to the outlet holes.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2006Publication date: March 15, 2007Inventors: Paul Gilson, Eamon Brady, Michael Gilvarry

Publication number: 20070010786Abstract: A catheter 1 suitable for advancement through a body passageway of a patient. The catheter 1 comprises a catheter body 4 which is flexible to provide the necessary trackability for the catheter 1 to advance through a body passageway, and two stainless steel reinforcement wires 5 extending along the catheter body 4 which provide the necessary pushability to advance the catheter 1 through the passageway. The reinforcements 5 are positioned diametrically opposed to one another by approximately 180 degrees on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the catheter 1, and the catheter body 4 is relatively soft and twistable. This configuration enables the entire catheter 1 to spontaneously twist during advancement so that the reinforcements 5 orientate themselves along a plane of neutral bending during advancement of the catheter 1. In this way, any resistance to the trackability of the catheter 1 due to the stiff reinforcements 5 is minimised.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2005Publication date: January 11, 2007Applicant: Salviac LimitedInventors: Brendan Casey, Avril O'Higgins, Eamon Brady, Patrick Griffin

Publication number: 20060286145Abstract: A delivery and deployment system for a self-expanding stent comprises a proximal handle having a rotatable thumbscrew and a sliding component which is attached to a distal stent restraining sheath. A rigid open coil spring is provided for converting rotation of the thumbscrew into translation of the sliding component). The spring is attached to the thumbscrew. The sliding component is located between adjacent coils of the spring. Rotation of the thumbscrew twists the spring and slowly slides the sliding component and hence the distal sheath in the proximal direction to uncover the stent, removing the constraint on the stent which is accurately deployed at the site of interest. The handle has a guide elongate channel which constrains the sliding component so that it cannot move in a rotational direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 6, 2006Publication date: December 21, 2006Applicant: Salviac LimitedInventors: Steven Horan, Eamon Brady, Martin Keegan

Publication number: 20060287669Abstract: A retrieval catheter having a retrieval catheter tip 1 at a distal end thereof, the tip being suitable for retrieving an embolic protection filter into the tip 1. The tip 1 comprises a flexible tip body 2 and two stiff reinforcement columns 3. The tip body 2 is radially expandable to facilitate retrieval of a filter into the tip 1, and the columns 3 extend longitudinally along the tip body 2 to prevent buckling of the tip 1 upon retrieval of the filter into the tip. The cross-sectional area of the columns 3, the cross sectional area of the tip body 2, and the overall cross-sectional area of the tip 1 all remain substantially unchanged along the length of the tip 1. This ensures the reinforcement provided to the tip 1 by the columns 3 remains substantially uniform along the length of the tip 1. Thus no longitudinal squeezing of the filter as it is retrieved into the tip 1 will be caused.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2005Publication date: December 21, 2006Applicant: Salviac LimitedInventors: Brendan Casey, Avril O'Higgins, Eamon Brady, Patrick Griffin, Michael Gilvarry

The outlet end has outlet openings which allow through passage of blood but retain embolic material within the filter body. After use, the catheter (118) is movable along the guidewire (101) to engage the proximal end of the filter element and close the inlet openings before sliding over the filter element from the proximal end to the distal end to progressively collapse the filter body on the guidewire (101) for retrieval.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2006Publication date: November 16, 2006Inventors: Paul Gilson, Eamon Brady, Padraig Maher, David Vale, Charles Taylor

Publication number: 20060241681Abstract: A support 103 for an embolic protection device comprises round wires 116 which may form one or more support hoops for a filter body The circumferential hoop formed by the wires 116 ensures that in the expanded position, the filter body 102 will be supported by the support frame 103 in circumferential apposition with the interior wall of the vasculature. The wires 116 may have a strain distributing linkage element in the form of a loop 120 in. The loop 120 acts as a diameter or circumference adjuster allowing an embolic protection device to adapt to different vessel contours and sizes whilst maintaining apposition with the vessel wall. The strain relieving geometry of the loops enhances the compliance of the bend points without creating a weakened hinge point, thus ensuring that there is no discontinuity in the circumferential seal against the vessel wall.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 17, 2006Publication date: October 26, 2006Inventors: Eamon Brady, David Vale, Ronald Kellly, John Neilan, Steven Horan, Gerard Rabitte, Gerry McCaffrey
