  • Publication number: 20140180263
Abstract: A surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a body operable with a surgical tool and an actuator system supported by the body and configured to convert rotational motion into linear motion to facilitate operation of the surgical tool. The actuator system includes an actuator rod comprising a shaft and a head portion disposed on an end of the shaft. The actuator rod is movable in a translational degree of freedom to facilitate operation of the surgical tool. The actuator system also includes a trigger rotatably supported about the body and moveable by a user. Additionally, the actuator system includes a transition gear coupled to the trigger and comprising a lobe operable to slidably interface with the head portion of the actuator rod. The transition gear is rotatable by the trigger to actuate the actuator rod.

  • Patent number: 7922739
Abstract: A surgical device 10 with an ergonomic handle 12 and, an elongated tubular portion 18 extending from the ergonomic handle 12 to a functional end 22. The elongated tubular portion 18 has a longitudinal axis 19, and a finger actuator 16 is positioned substantially in line with this axis. Furthermore, the surgical device 10 may also include a rod 20 functionally disposed within the tubular portion 18 along the longitudinal axis 19. The rod 20 may be coupled proximally to the finger actuator 16 and distally to the functional end 22, such that bidirectional pressure applied by the user's finger to the finger actuator 16 along the longitudinal axis 19 manipulates the functional end 22 in a bidirectional manner in response to or in a common direction to the bidirectional pressure. The surgical device 10 may further comprise a ratcheting mechanism 24 to lock the finger actuator 16 in a fixed position, thus locking the functional end 22 in a fixed position.

  • Publication number: 20090299141
Abstract: A laparoscopic surgical instrument configured to be ergonomic and anthropometrically correct, comprising: a) an ergonomic handle configured to orient a hand of a surgeon in a functional position, the handle comprising a wall structure defining an interior portion, and adapted to contain at least a portion of one or more working mechanisms; b) an actuating mechanism actuatable by the surgeon and supported within the interior portion of the handle; c) a working shaft having a proximal end coupled to and operable with the actuating mechanism, the working shaft having an elongate configuration and a distal working end configured to couple a surgical tool to be manipulated by the surgeon; and d) means for accessing the interior portion of the handle to expose an inner side of the wall structure and at least a portion of each of the working mechanisms for cleaning, sterilization and maintenance purposes.
