  • Patent number: 5571099
Abstract: A side firing fiberoptic probe has an optical fiber with proximal and distal ends and the cladding is removed from its distal end portion. On the distal end of the core is a transparent reflector of generally cylindrical configuration and it is of larger diameter than and coaxial with the core. The reflector has a planar face at its opposite end which extends at an angle to the axis of the reflector and core. Extending about and sealingly engaged with the fiber distal end portion and the reflector is the cylindrical body portion of a transparent end cap. The cap has a closed end spaced from the planar face of the reflector, and it provides an atmospheric interface between the inner surface of its closed end and the planar face of the reflector and about the unclad distal end portion of the core. Light rays passing through the core fall on the planar face in a generally circular pattern and are reflected thereby at an angle of 50.degree.-90.degree. in a generally conical beam through the reflector and cap.

  • Patent number: 5431647
Abstract: A fiberoptic diffuser has an optical fiber having a light transmitting core, cladding about the core, and a buffer layer about the cladding. The core at the distal end portion of the fiber is exposed and a diffusing sleeve is disposed thereabout. A transparent cylindrical cap is disposed outwardly of the diffusing sleeve and overlies the exposed core, and a reflector is provided in the cap in axial alignment with the distal end of the core to reflect light rays exiting the core. The light rays exiting the core are reflected by the reflector and are refracted by the sleeve to exit through the cap over substantially the entire length of the exposed core.

  • Patent number: 5429635
Abstract: A fiberoptic diffuser for photodynamic therapy applications comprises an optical fiber having a light transmitting core, cladding about the core, and a buffer layer about the cladding. The distal end portion of the fiber core is free from the cladding and buffer layer, and the exposed distal end of the core has a conical configuration. A cap extends about the distal end portion of the fiber and has a spheroidal end portion of light diffusing material which extends about the exposed conical end of the fiber core. The cap also has a mounting portion engaged with the buffer layer of the fiber, and it provides a cavity in which the exposed core is disposed. Light rays passing through the fiber to its distal end are refracted outwardly at the conical end of the core into the spheroidal end portion of the cap and are further refracted by the cap to exit therefrom over substantially the entire surface of the spheroidal end portion.

  • Patent number: 4995691
Abstract: A fiber optic treatment probe (10) delivers laser light from a laser light source (11) through a diffuser (26). An input end face (30) of the fiber is angled with respect to a plane (36) normal to an optical axis (18) of the fiber. The end face angle is selected to excite desired modes of the fiber without exceeding the critical angle of the fiber, thereby producing a desired light output from the diffuser.
