  • Patent number: 5622618
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for use as an in-line fluid flow monitor through filter media of a variety typically employed in domestic applications upstream of a kitchen faucet as well as unusually low pressure water supplies. Apparatus includes an outer housing with an input port leading to a rotatable turbine within the housing. The turbine, rotatable about a longitudinal axis, is coupled to an offset gear which, in turn, is coupled to a reduction gear train which includes first and second gear arrays mounted for rotation about a first and second axis located parallel with and spaced from the longitudinal axis. Fluid communication is provided from the turbine chamber through the gear train to an output port. The gear train ends in an output which is engaged in driving relationship with an oppositely disposed rotatable valve member having resilient pawl legs extending therefrom. The pawls are configured to engage the output to provide rotatable ratcheting movement.

  • Patent number: 5378370
Abstract: A water treatment tank for use in a water treatment or softening system is disclosed which is operative in a treatment mode to receive untreated water through an inlet port and to pass treated water through an outlet port, and which is operative in a backwash mode to receive wash water through the outlet port and to pass waste water through the inlet port. Treatment tank has a vessel having an interior cavity which is partitioned into a top headspace portion, and a middle treatment bed space portion, and a bottom headspace portion via the placement of a pair of distributor filters mounted within the interior cavity to extend between the side walls thereof. The filters are spaced-apart, respectively, from the top end wall to define therewith the top headspace portion and the bottom headspace portion.

  • Patent number: 5300230
Abstract: A method is disclosed for the cyclic regeneration of a water softening system having a plurality of parallel water treatment units, N, each containing a water softening treatment bed which requires periodic regeneration. The method entails first calculating a volume of water to be treated per cycle, V.sub.s, by dividing the capacity of the smallest capacity treatment unit by N. Water is then treated with all the treatment units until V.sub.s water has been treated by any of said units. Once V.sub.s water has been treated by any of the units, an arbitrarily selected first unit is subjected to regeneration while water is treated with all the remaining units. The process is continued by sequentially selecting the next remaining treatment unit for regeneration once another V.sub.s volume of water has been treated by any of the units.

  • Patent number: 5157979
Abstract: Disclosed is a novel helix drive for use with a valve assembly of a water softener. The helix drive comprises a stationary drive axle bearing a longitudinally slotted sleeve; a piston having an apertured end and being disposed within said drive axle sleeve; a transverse pin, having ends fitted with guide shoes, disposed through said piston aperture and located within said axle slot; and a drive gear having a pair of helix paths within said pin guide shoes are disposed. Rotation of said drive gear results in reciprocating longitudinal movement of the pin within the axle slot and, thus, the piston.

  • Patent number: 5116491
Abstract: In its broadest aspects, a method for the cyclic regeneration of a water softening system disclosed. The water softening system comprises an exchange medium in a tank which is in fluid communication with a brine storage tank. This method comprises the steps of filling the brine storage tank with refill No. 2 of softened water in a quantity sufficient to create sufficient brine for said exchange medium, said brine storage tank already containing refill No. 1 of softened water from a later step of the method. The exchange medium is subjected to backwashing No. 1 with water flowing counter the direction of water flowing therethrough during water softening operations. Next, brine from the brine storage tank is passed through the exchange medium. Water then is passed through the brine exchange tank. The exchange medium thereafter is subjected to backwashing No. 2 with water flowing counter to the direction of water flowing therethrough during the water softening operation.

  • Patent number: 5089140
Abstract: In its broadest aspects, a method for the cyclic regeneration of a water softening system is disclosed. The water softening system comprises an exchange medium in a tank which is in fluid communication with a brine storage tank. This method comprises the steps of filling the brine storage tank with a second refill of softened water in a quantity sufficient to create sufficient brine for said exchange medium, said brine storage tank already containing a second refill of softened water from a later step of the method. The exchange medium is subjected to first backwashing with water flowing counter the direction of water flowing therethrough during water softening operations. Next, brine from the brine storage tank is passed through the exchange medium. Water then is passed through the brine exchange tank. The exchange medium thereafter is subjected to second backwashing with water flowing counter to the direction of water flowing therethrough during the water softening operation.

  • Patent number: 5065901
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for use as an in-line fluid flow monitor through filter media of a variety typically employed in households upstream of a kitchen faucet. The apparatus includes a housing with an input port leading to a housing cap within which a turbine chamber retains a rotating turbine. The rotating turbine is coupled to a reduction gear train positioned within a gear housing, in turn, retained within the body of the housing in a reduction gear chamber. Fluid communication is provided from the turbine chamber to the gear reduction chamber. The gear reduction chamber ends in an eccentric output which drives the pawl of a pawl and ratchet assembly forming a part of a rotatable valve. This rotatable valve rotates in increments as a camming stem affixed thereto moves along a camming surface until encountering a slot component.

  • Patent number: 4466457
Abstract: A valve device for directing hard water past a softening means and for further mixing hard water with soft water. A double headed first valve is slidably mounted within the tubular shaped main body of the valve device and is separated internally therefrom forming a bypass passage extending from the hard water inlet to the main outlet. An external control knob is operable to move the valve from the closed position to an open position. A second valve extends through the first valve and is movable by a second control to and from the first valve to allow hard water to pass through the closed first valve from the hard water inlet to the soft water outlet to control mixing of hard water with soft water.

  • Patent number: 4379053
Abstract: A filter assembly having bypass valves to allow continued liquid flow during the removal and reinsertion of a new filter. The assembly includes a cylindrical filter housing threadedly mounted to a valve housing with a cylindrical filter removably mounted within the filter housing. The valve housing has an inlet connectable to a source of liquid. A first valve is rotatable from a filter position directing all liquid flow from the inlet to the filter to a bypass position directing all liquid flow from the inlet to the outlet of the assembly. A shut off valve prevents liquid flow into the filter when the first valve is in the bypass position.

  • Patent number: 4359384
Abstract: A lever actuated valve stem for control of liquid flow through a filtering device. The device is connectable to a source of impure liquids and includes a filter disposed between the inlet and the outlet of the device for the removal of the impurities. The valve stem is operable to direct fluid flow through the filter or to bypass the filter. The valve includes a lever slidably connected to a valve stem by means of a pin fixably attached to the lever and extending through a slot of the stem. The slot is arranged relative to the longitudinal axis of the stem to lock the pin and lever in either the filtering position or the bypass position.
