  • Patent number: 5527469
Abstract: A titanium oxide hydrolysate slurry prepared by the sulfate process is treated with either an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal carbonate to solubilize the sulfur bound to the titanium at a temperature of from 60.degree. C. to 120.degree. C. and the slurry is treated with an organic acid to remove the alkali metal compounds present. This process produces titanium oxide hydrolysate of high purity.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 12, 1995
Date of Patent: June 18, 1996
Inventors: Earl R. Lawhorne, Woodford R. Brown, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4944936
Abstract: High purity titanium dioxide having uniform controlled particle size and method therefor. Titanium tetrachloride is mixed with water to form titanium oxychloride, which in turn is precipitated from aqueous solution to form titanium dioxide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 29, 1988
Date of Patent: July 31, 1990
    Assignee: Kemira, Inc.
    Inventor: Earl R. Lawhorne
  • Patent number: 4923682
Abstract: A method for producing titanium dioxide with an anatase crystal structure from a titanium oxychloride solution. Titanium tetrachloride is mixed with water to form titanium oxychloride, which in turn is mixed with an organic reagent, preferably sorbitol. The resulting solution is hydrolyzed, precipitated and calcined to form titanium dioxide with an anatase crystal structure.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 30, 1989
Date of Patent: May 8, 1990
    Assignee: Kemira, Inc.
Inventors: George L. Roberts, Earl R. Lawhorne
  • Patent number: 4781911
Abstract: A titanium dioxide compositon suitable for incorporation into ceramic frit, and process for preparation thereof. A clarified titanium sulfate liquor is hydrolyzed and precipitated to yield relatively large and uniform-sized hydrolysate particles which are easily separated from the acidic liquor by filtration.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 10, 1987
Date of Patent: November 1, 1988
    Assignee: Kemira, Inc.
    Inventor: Earl R. Lawhorne
  • Patent number: 4536268
Abstract: A process for the reduction of the viscosity of high solids pigment slurries is disclosed whereby the slurries are subjected to electrodialysis utilizing an ammonium salt or dilute acid solution as the anolyte.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 12, 1984
Date of Patent: August 20, 1985
    Assignee: American Cyanamid Company
    Inventor: Earl R. Lawhorne
  • Patent number: 4227934
Abstract: Titanium dioxide pigment slurries containing above 50 percent titanium dioxide are reduced in viscosity by treatment with an anion exchange resin.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 3, 1979
Date of Patent: October 14, 1980
    Assignee: American Cyanamid Company
