  • Patent number: 10918672
Abstract: A method of curing (or at least treating) HIV, by obtaining small tissue mesenchymal stem cells (stMSC) from adipose tissue of a patient with HIV or from a syngeneic donor or an immuno-compatible donor, wherein said stMSC are i) 4-6 ?m in diameter, ii) pluripotent, and iii) have CD11b?, CD34?, CD45?, CD 29, CD 49, Oct 4 and SSEA 4 surface markers when harvested. Preferred sources are autologous adipose tissue. Next those stMSCs are gene edited to provide CCR5? stMSCs and optionally amplified by growth in culture and/or by cell selection for gene edited stMSCs and then re-introducing into the patient. Preferably, the CCR5? stMSCs will re-populate the patient with stem cells that can no longer act as latent HIV reservoirs and can differentiate into immune cells that are HIV resistant. If desired, the patient can be first treated, e.g., by radiation, to destroy the bone marrow cells before the re-introduction.

  • Patent number: 10905722
Abstract: Adult stem cells are reprogrammed to form pacemaker cells and Purkinje cells through the sequential activation of SHOX2>TBX5>HCN2. These Purkinje cells spontaneously surround and connect with the larger pacemaker cells, thus forming an induced sinoatrial body that produces funny current and can make cardiovascular tissues beat in a manner similar to a natural sinoatrial node.

  • Patent number: 9775532
Abstract: A system and method for communicating data and signals through the Medical Implant Communication Service Band using a repeater or base station in the proximity to an implantable device within a patient is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the device is capable for early detection and monitoring of congestive heart failure in a patient. Impedance measurements, or other health parameters depending on the type of implantable device or sensor used, are sent using a bi-directional low-power radio operating in the MICS band to a nearby base station which may provide signal processing and analysis. The base station may have an interface to one or more communications networks to connect to a remote location. The system and method of the present invention permits a healthcare professional to monitor an ambulatory patient's condition at a remote location and to program the implanted device.

  • Patent number: 9310300
Abstract: A structure is configured to retain optical diagnostic assay components in a manner that enables them to be synergistically combined or coupled both mechanically and electrically with a conventional mobile electronic device (such as a smartphone), such that the pairing maintains a mutually advantageous relationship to provide a compact portable optical assay apparatus in which the optical assay portion has access to the image sensor, battery power, microprocessor, and data capture, analysis, storage, display and transmission capabilities of the smartphone, and the smartphone portion provides the overall apparatus with features of transportability, user interface, and information storage, analysis and retrieval, and transmission of assay results to a separate site, such as a site of records related to the provider of the sample being assayed. Methods of providing such structure and of performing an optical assay of sample material utilizing such structure are described.

  • Patent number: 9242069
Abstract: A method is described for repairing tissue of a selected organ from among heart, brain, liver, pancreas, kidney, and glands in a patient's body. In the method, stem cells that have the capability to repair tissue of the selected organ are intraluminally applied through a designated natural body vessel or duct leading to a predetermined target site of the tissue of the selected organ to be repaired. The stem cells are delivered into the respective vessel or duct through a catheter having a proximal portion of relatively larger central lumen diameter and outer diameter, and a distal portion of relatively smaller central lumen diameter and outer diameter, the two portions being integral with one another so that stem cells delivered into the central lumen of the proximal portion will flow through and exit the central lumen of the distal portion, the lumen diameter and length of each of the two portions being selected to minimize the pressure drop across the catheter during flow of the stem cells.

  • Patent number: 8781587
Abstract: A device is presented for evaluating whether an episode of sleep apnea is occurring in a patient suffering from chronic sleep apnea disorder, for delivery of appropriate therapy. The device includes circuitry adapted to respond to a cardiac signal generated by the heart. Switching circuitry diverts passage of the heart signal through both a high impedance path and a substantially lower impedance path, and a differential amplifier processes the resulting signal pairs to ascertain the difference in magnitude between the two signals of each pair. An analyzer thereof determines changes in the patient's ventilation, from which inordinately reduced patient ventilation is detected to assess possible occurrence of an episode of sleep apnea. If the analyzer denotes change of ventilation between otherwise regular respiratory cycles, an actual episode of sleep apnea is indicated.

  • Patent number: 8777851
Abstract: An implanted device-implemented method of detecting and monitoring congestive heart failure in a patient includes performing ongoing measurements of changes in local impedance of a portion of the patient's body between at least two electrodes on the exterior of the implanted device, the changes representing ventilation of the patient, and including measuring the patient's respiratory rate and respiratory amplitude. A body-implantable device is adapted to detect and monitor congestive heart failure in a patient, and includes a circuit module coupled to plural surface electrodes of the device arranged and adapted, when the device is implanted, for contacting tissue in a portion of the patient's body generally occupied by the lungs, to monitor changes in local impedance of said body portion, and to detect the patient's EKG.

  • Publication number: 20140039460
Abstract: A method is described for optimizing regenerative cell retention at a tissue site in the body of a subject. In the method, the regenerative cells are delivered to the tissue site through a blood vessel in communication with the site, while blood flow through the vessel is occluded at the site for a prescribed period of sufficient duration to increase pressure at the site for enhanced concentration and retention of the regenerative cells at the tissue site, but of insufficient duration to cause damage to healthy tissue at the site for lack of blood perfusion during the period of occlusion.
