  • Patent number: 9445424
Abstract: Embodiments herein relate to a method in a radio base station (12) for scheduling a radio resource to a first user equipment (10). The radio base station (12) is comprised in a radio communications network and controls a number of radio resources to be scheduled for communication to a number of user equipments (10,11). The number of user equipments comprises the first user equipment (10) and being served by the radio base station (12). The scheduling is based on channel quality of channels used by the respective user equipments. The radio base station (12) estimates a first channel quality of a channel used by the first user equipment (10). The radio base station determines a pathloss between the first user equipment (10) and the radio base station (12), and computes a second channel quality of the channel based on the estimated first channel quality and the determined pathloss.

  • Patent number: 6934546
Abstract: Radiocommunication systems having improved soft handoff capabilities are described. During soft handoff a mobile station may have several transmission sources (active set members) supplying it with substantially the same information. Mobile stations which are not moving may not require as many sources to provide adequate received signal quality. Therefore, mobile stations which are not moving are identified using locating techniques and members of the active set are compared with a higher threshold to remove weaker branches more rapidly than when using a threshold that is applied to mobile stations that are in motion.

  • Patent number: 6823193
Abstract: The downlink transmit powers of base stations involved in a diversity handover communication with a mobile station are controlled to minimize base station power “drift.” A downlink reference power level is determined based on detected, current transmit power levels of the diversity handover base stations. One or more power offsets is determined for one or more of the base stations based on signal quality measurements made by the mobile station. The reference power level and power offset(s) are used to selectively regulate an adjustment to the transmit power levels of the diversity handover base stations. The general reference power is transmitted at a first, relatively high frequency to the diversity handover base stations by embedding it in a user data frame. In that way, the signal processing load is kept to a minimum despite the higher transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 6594499
Abstract: A power control system method for controlling the downlink (DL) transmit power from a base station (BS) to a mobile station (MS) in a cellular telecommunications network. A power balancing value &Dgr;P is divided into a number of smaller correction implements which are distributed over a plurality of spaced apart slots for DL power control. For example, if it is desired to correct DL transmit power by six dB, a total of six different correction values of one dB each may be implemented with adjacent ones of the correction values being spaced apart by a number of slots. The distribution or spreading of DL transmit power corrections over a period of time results in a plurality of smaller corrections as opposed to one or a few large corrections, thereby reducing potential adverse effects on the inner loop power control of the network.

  • Patent number: 6560205
Abstract: A loop network hub including a hub port with a loop initialization insertion mechanism. The loop initialization insertion mechanism causes a hub port which detects a new node port connection to automatically begin generating loop initialization data. A hub port continues to generate loop initialization data until that hub port receives a loop initialization sequence. The loop initialization data propagates around the loop of the hub, halting ordinary processing. In this way, the entire loop is cleared. Upon receiving a loop initialization sequence, the hub port originating the loop initialization data inserts the new node port into the loop. At this point, loop initialization begins and each node port in the loop network obtains a unique loop network address.

  • Patent number: 6504828
Abstract: An adaptive handoff algorithm that governs mobile handoffs between sectors within base stations in a CDMA system is disclosed. The handoff algorithm is selected according to the type of service requested by the mobile. Further, the handoff algorithm uses various quality measures in order to induce mobile handoffs that result in desirable operating conditions for the type of service requested by the mobile. For example, a voice call may result in an handoff algorithm that induces the mobile to handoff to sectors that minimizes the mobile output power in order to maximize battery capacity and decrease uplink interference. Moreover, another algorithm may be implemented for packet intensive services, such as internet web browsing, to induce the mobile to handoff to sectors that result in reduced downlink output power, which tends to decrease interference in the cell.

  • Patent number: 6473624
Abstract: To combat base station power drift, the power transmission level of each base station in a diversity handover may be compared to a power reference established for all base stations in the diversity handover. The difference between the transmit power of each base station and the reference power threshold may then be used to correct the transmit power level of that base station. Because the power correction depends on the difference between the actual transmit power at the base station and the common power level reference, the various transmit powers of the different base stations in the diversity handover converge relatively quickly. Thus, even if the transmit power command from the mobile station is received in error in one or more of the base stations, the power correction based on the comparison to the common power reference compensates for such errors to reduce base station drift, obtain full diversity gain, and reduce unnecessary downlink interference.

  • Patent number: 6438116
Abstract: A technique for regulating the transmit power level for a mobile station following a hard handoff in a code division multiple access (CDMA) based system is disclosed. In an embodiment of the invention, a profile is developed from data associated with transmit power levels from a statistical collection of a plurality of hard handoff events. A power margin is derived from the profile such that it may be varied in accordance with high or low load conditions in the system. The power margin is then applied to mobiles performing hard handoffs such that they transmit only at the appropriate power level required for a sufficient connection in the cell. The technique provides an automated and dynamic power margin which is scalable according to the varying loading conditions in the system. The invention reduces the amount of interference generated by transmitting at unnecessarily high power levels following hard handoffs thereby improving the overall performance and connection quality of the system.

  • Patent number: 6351642
Abstract: A system and method for improving soft hand-off in a CDMA system uses mobile station location and velocity information to maintain soft hand-off legs with those cells in which the mobile station is more likely to be located. The system and method of the present invention estimates the weighted probability of the mobile station arriving in neighboring cells and produces “bias” values for those cells that the mobile station is more likely to be entering or to be located in. These bias values are used for modifying signal quality values for those cells, and for determining whether the current cell or neighbor cells are to be placed in an active set so as to establish, or maintain, soft hand-off legs. The system and method of the present invention thus chooses those cells which are more likely to be retained as soft hand-off legs and therefore reduces the overall number of soft hand-offs.

  • Patent number: 6253087
Abstract: A technique is disclosed for traffic management in spread spectrum wireless telecommunications systems using different admission control levels different frequency layers. In an embodiment of the invention, the capacity on a first frequency, having a specific admission control level, is permitted to increase to the point where the development of coverage holes occurs due to the effects of cell breathing are present. This is compensated for by maintaining a designated frequency that is free from coverage problems by applying a stricter admission control relative to the first frequency. Thus calls or new access attempts affected by coverage problems on the first frequency are diverted to the designated frequency. The method improves overall network capacity and call quality in the network by more efficiently utilizing spectral resources.
