Patent number: 4958149Abstract: A display panel includes a group of cathode segments, each segment comprising two cathode bars adapted to glow simultaneously to produce a single segment and circuits for coupling energizing signals to each bar of a segment separately and simultaneously so that if one bar does not light, the other will and proper display will be achieved. The panel also includes anode electrodes.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1985Date of Patent: September 18, 1990Assignee: Telegenix, Inc.Inventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 4766345Abstract: A cold cathode gas discharge display panel comprising a gas-filled envelope including a glass base plate and glass face plate. An array of linear electrodes are provided on the base plate with some of the cathodes having adjacent ends. The usual masking layer of insulating material is provided on the base plate to outline the cathodes but this insulating layer does not cover the adjacent ends of the cathodes so that these ends are operatively disposed close together. Thus an improved glow blending of adjacent cathode ends is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Telegenix, Inc.Inventors: Edgar L. Harvey, Joseph Lippencott

Patent number: 4737686Abstract: A dot matrix display panel having cathodes of a shape to provide an area of glow with each cathode having a cutout portion to reduce the power required to cause the cathode to glow, the glow filling the space formed by the cutout portion. The panel includes line-like anodes which overlie the cutout portions of the cathodes.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1986Date of Patent: April 12, 1988Assignee: Telegenix, Inc.Inventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 4730139Abstract: A gas display panel includes a base plate carrying cathode electrodes and a face plate carrying anode electrodes, the base plate and face plate being hermetically sealed together to form an envelope which is filled with an ionizable gas and mercury vapor. The base plate carries a conductor which is used to heat the panel and this conductor extends over the surface of the base plate into the areas of the seal between the base plate and face plate and it also is positioned to provide heat at the location where a source of mercury is coupled to the base plate.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1986Date of Patent: March 8, 1988Assignee: Telegenix, Inc.Inventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 4510417Abstract: A display panel comprising an array of scan cells formed by an array of row scan anodes and an array of column cathodes, the scan anodes operating with the lower surfaces of the cathodes to provide cathode glow. The panel also includes an array of display cells formed by an array of row display anodes and the same cathodes, the display anodes operating with restricted areas on the top surfaces of the cathodes to provide cathode glow. The rows of display cells are offset from the rows of scan cells so that the glow transfer path and display glow cells are disposed in an optimum location for panel operation and life.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1983Date of Patent: April 9, 1985Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 4471263Abstract: A display panel comprises a gas-filled envelope made up of a base plate and a face plate sealed together hermetically. The base plate is provided with a plurality of parallel, longitudinal slots in its top surface, and vertical slots in its end edges, and an anode wire is disposed in each of the longitudinal slots in the base plate, and they are recessed in the edge slots and terminate at pins secured to the bottom surface of the base plate. Cathode electrodes are provided on the base plate, and they also terminate at pins secured to the bottom surface of the base plate. With this arrangement, panels can be butted end to end to provide a longer line of characters than one panel alone.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1982Date of Patent: September 11, 1984Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 4437037Abstract: A display panel comprises a gas-filled envelope made up of a base plate and a face plate sealed together hermetically. The base plate is provided with a plurality of parallel, longitudinal slots, and an anode wire is disposed in each of the slots in the base plate. An array of identical metal strip electrodes are provided on the base plate at an angle to the anode wires to define operative gas cells therewith. The first strip electrode is operated as a keep-alive anode with respect to two auxiliary electrodes seated in slots in the base plate, the second strip electrode is operated as a reset cathode, and the other strip electrodes are operated as the scan/display cathodes for the panel.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1981Date of Patent: March 13, 1984Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 4414490Abstract: A display panel and method of operating it wherein the panel includes columns of both scan cells and display cells which alternate with columns of only scan cells, and the columns of scan cells are scanned more rapidly than the columns of scan and display cells.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1982Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 3959681Abstract: The display panel comprises a gas-filled envelope made up of a base plate and a face plate. The base plate carries a plurality of display cathodes arrayed in rows and columns and, substantially coplanar therewith, a plurality of scan cathodes arrayed in rows and columns, with each row of scan cathodes being positioned between two rows of display cathodes. A single anode is formed on the face plate of the envelope, and suitable masking is provided so that a viewer can see only the display cathodes through the face plate. In operation of the panel, the scan cathodes are energized column-by-column, and selected adjacent display cathodes are energized simultaneously to display a message or character.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1974Date of Patent: May 25, 1976Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 3949261Abstract: The display panel comprises a first insulating plate which carries a set of pins to which a first set of wires and other electrodes can be attached, and a second similar insulating plate having a set of pins to which a second set of wires and other electrodes can be secured. A set of cathodes is disposed between the two plates oriented at an angle to the first and second arrays of electrodes to form a dot matrix therewith. The cathodes are electrically connected to selected pins. One insulating plate is secured to the panel base plate to form one complete sub-assembly, and the other insulating plate is secured to the panel face plate to form another complete sub-assembly, and the two sub-assemblies are sealed together hermetically to form the completed panel.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1975Date of Patent: April 6, 1976Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Harvey

Patent number: 3942060Abstract: The panel comprises a gas-filled envelope including an elongated base plate having a transverse slot at about its center which divides the plate into two portions. Both portions of the base plate are provided with parallel slots in their top surfaces, and two sets of scan anodes are provided, one set seated in the slots in each portion of the base plate. The inner ends of the scan anodes are bent into and secured in the transverse slot. Two sets of scan-display cathodes are seated on the base plate, one associated with each set of scan anodes, and oriented transverse to the scan anodes and forming rows and columns of scanning or priming cells therewith. An apertured insulating cell sheet having two sets of apertures or cells is seated on the cathodes, with each set of apertures arrayed in rows and columns and overlaying a set of scanning cells, with each display cell aligned with a scanning cell beneath it. Two sets of display anodes are provided, one associated with each set of display cells.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1975Date of Patent: March 2, 1976Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventor: Edgar L.
