  • Patent number: 5392502
Abstract: A micro-machining center, in the form of an automatic screw machine, utilizes an array of tools and machining support mechanisms removably mounted on a carriage movable parallel to a first axis, and a spindle/collet mechanism movable parallel to a second axis, with machining and manipulating operations being conducted at the intersection of the two axes in a common plane. A microprocessor control system having multiaxis command capability precisely drives the carriage and spindle/collet mechanisms separately or concurrently to perform a sequence of supported machining functions for fabrication of a given part from stock. With this arrangement of microprocessor, tools and spindle/collet mechanism commands for manufacture of a part can readily be generated, verified, used and retained in storage for later use.

  • Patent number: 4658633
Abstract: A system for rapidly measuring, during production, various properties of cylindrical products, such as aluminum cans, uses both optical and non-contact air gauge measurements. The system is configured with three dimensional control to receive cans for optical and air gauge analysis on a movable platform having spaced apart receiving positions. A video camera inspects and identifies cans in one position, using X, Y and Z axis control. Wall thickness is measured using a reference mandrel and a movable air gauge having an end nozzle directed toward a linear reference surface on the mandrel. The air gauge uses hydrodynamic balance to maintain a specified gap relative to the opposing surface, with a high degree of accuracy. Before a measurement is taken, the air nozzle is traversed along the length of the mandrel, and its position sensed and converted to digital form, with the recorded points being entered into storage.

  • Patent number: 4106376
Abstract: Spindle carrier is indexed from work station to work station and carries a plurality of spindle assemblies with work carrying collets from station to station. Each spindle assembly is adjustably mounted with respect to the spindle carrier and each collet is spring-loaded against a face to maintain the collet at a reference position and each collet is spring-loaded toward the closed position so that it is normally closed without application of an operating force. During indexing which causes engagement of a spindle with the spindle drive belt, the peripheral speed of the spindle drive pulley is substantially matched with the peripheral speed of the belt to provide smooth acceleration.

  • Patent number: 4037493
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed herein for driving and selectively stopping a platform at predetermined work stations which includes a frame rotatably supporting the platform and a index wheel coupled to the platform in fixed relationship therewith. A drive wheel of lesser diameter is offset from the index wheel so as to overlap edge portions thereof and further includes a pin carried on its edge portion slidably engageable with one of a plurality of slots provided in the edge marginal region of the index wheel. The drive wheel is powered so that the pin enters and leaves each slot in a driving relationship whereby the index wheel and the platform are rotatably moved thereby. A spring biased dog operated by a cam mechanism selectively engages with the index wheel to register the platform at each of the respective work stations.
