    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for a multibeam phased array antenna transmission based on heterodyning to produce the RF transmission signals with appropriate phase shift and thereby reducing the effect of certain space constraints in the confined area of the transmitter as higher and higher frequencies of transmission are employed. In the present invention, RF signals at an intermediate frequency, not the ultimate frequency of transmission, comprise the signal frequencies of a beam forming network which provides input to a multiplexed power divider. The power divider outputs the phase shifted signals to an input at each of a number of multiplexed combiners. The output of each combiner is fed to a mixing device which then shifts the input frequency to a higher frequency, using an appropriate local oscillator signal. The mixer outputs are coupled to separate power amplifiers, whose outputs are fed to the elemental radiators.

    Abstract: An active transmit phased array antenna system for generating multiple independent simultaneous antenna beams to illuminate desired regions while not illuminating other regions. The size shape of the regions is a function of the size and number of elements populating the array and the number of beams is a function of the number of beam forming networks feeding the array. All the elements of the array are operated at the same amplitude level and beam shapes and directions are determined by the phase settings. The active transmit phased array antenna includes a plurality of antenna elements disposed in a hexiform configuration. Each antenna element is identical and includes a radiating horn capable of radiating in each of two orthogonal polarizations. The horn is fed by a multi-pole bandpass filter means whose function is to pass energy in the desired band and reject energy at other frequencies. The filter means is coupled into an air dielectric cavity mounted on substrate.

    Abstract: This device provides for a substantially orthogonal transition or connection point between a strip transmission line configuration (one conductor, or two conductors sandwiched around a dielectric support, positioned in air between two ground planes such as might be used in a microwave antenna feed network) and a coaxial line section. The particular construction of the "side-launch transition" suppresses spurious parallel plate modes, and, in the case of two conductors surrounding a dielectric, trapped modes which occur between the two conductors. A U-shaped upper "dam" and corresponding lower "dam," electrically interconnected at several points, surround the termination of the stripline conductor(s) and provide suppression of parallel plate moding at the transition. In the case of two conductors surrounding a dielectric, electrical interconnection at the terminal point of the stripline conductors suppresses the trapped modes before they can be launched.

    Abstract: This specification discloses a multibeam antenna which produces a null at one or more specified points with greater frequency band width for a given null depth. For example, a ring of beams about the null are set to have a phase difference between adjacent beams of 360.degree. divided by the number of beams in the ring. The amplitude of each of the beams is chosen so that each such ring set is self-nulled at the intended null and any common change in the side lobes of all beams of a ring set at the null due to frequency change is substantially equal. Thus, even with change in frequency, the null depth and position is substantially unchanged.
