  • Publication number: 20080132219
Abstract: Techniques are provided for providing automated configuration of computing devices. More particularly, principles of the invention may use anticipated context to precondition a device whose operational mode is alterable via computer controllable operations. Anticipated context may be affected by any number of parameters including, but not limited to, current location, time of day, destination end-point, e.g., phone number to be called, past history, subscription rate plans, power requirements of device, application demands with respect to quality-of-service (QoS), security, calendar information, and so on. Further, principles of the invention may use locally derived knowledge about the intended use of a device and dynamically enable it in a desirable mode of operation using locally reachable configuration parameters stored in advance based on the anticipated context for the operation of the device.

  • Patent number: 6985933
Abstract: A method and system for increasing ease-of-use and bandwidth utilization in a wireless device capable of accessing a communication network is disclosed. The present invention uses the wireless device to send information about the environment to a server on the communication network. In response, the wireless device receives identifiers from the server of the web sites most likely to be requested by a user of the wireless device in that environment. In a further aspect of the present invention, the wireless device may also pre-fetch contents from the identified web sites in times when bandwidth is not in use to further speed responsiveness of the device.

  • Patent number: 6968380
Abstract: A method and system for increasing ease-of-use and bandwidth utilization in a wireless device capable of accessing a communication network is disclosed. The present invention receives information about the wireless device's environment, and then uses the environment to determine web sites most likely to be requested. Identifiers of the web sites most likely to be requested are then pushed to the wireless device for selection by the user. In a further aspect of the present invention, the wireless device may also pre-fetch contents from the identified web sites in times when bandwidth is not in use to further speed responsiveness of the device.

  • Patent number: 6782396
Abstract: A method, program and system aligns students and teachers according to dominant learning and teaching styles. The invention creates a menu of learning styles, and a second menu of teaching styles. Students are then tested using each learning style contained in the first menu, and the test scores are entered into a student database. Teachers are also tested using each teaching style contained in the second menu, and a database is then created for the teacher test scores. Using the student and teacher test scores, the system calculates a best-fit match between students and teachers according to corresponding learning and teaching styles.

  • Publication number: 20030128859
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for accessing, transmitting and storing a client's hearing profile on a network, which results in the creation of an audio font that is customized to the client's hearing preferences. In turn, the client's audio font may be accessed by the client and transmitted to a client's selected digital audio device via a network connection, which attenuates the sound drivers of the digital audio device to properly filter and adjust audio output in a manner that best enhances the sound quality to the client's needs and preferences. The invention allows the client to customize the sounds emitted from digital audio devices by providing audio preference feedback which modifies the selected audio font to more accurately represent the audio preferences of the client.

  • Publication number: 20030037072
Abstract: This concerns a method and system for using virtual trading stamps to conduct commerce on public data networks such as the Internet. Virtual trading stamp offers are distributed through the network to network users. These offers are presented on viewable pages of material and may have ancillary or no relevance to other information presented on the same pages. Offers may be presented in the form of icons having the appearance of trading stamps. Sponsors of such offers arrange for their distribution with hosts of what are termed cool sites on the networks (e.g. operators of popular or frequently “surfed” sites). A page transmitted from a cool site may contain plural offers from one or more sponsors. Each offer/icon is linked to a program applet designed to establish network contact with a stamp server when the respective icon is selected (“clicked on”) by a viewer.

  • Publication number: 20030014321
Abstract: A method, computer program product, and data processing system for conducting purchases of products with only a single action to be performed by the purchaser is disclosed. A user captures an image of an item for purchase with a client device, to which the user performs only a single action (e.g., pressing a button). The client device transmits the image and a client identifier to a central server, which identifies the item and combines the information about the item with customer billing and shipping information to automatically create and process an order for the item without any further intervention by the user.
