    Abstract: A moiety with the formula:A-X-Ar.sup.1 -O-Ar.sup.2reacts in the presence of a catalyst with a moiety of the formula:B-Ar.sup.3 -O-Yto form a linkage of the formula:A-X-Ar.sup.1 -O-Ar.sup.3 -B+Ar.sup.2 -O-Ywherein Ar.sup.1, Ar.sup.2 and Ar.sup.3 are aromatic moieties, X is an activating group, Y is a hydrogen, a trihydrocarbylsilyl, a trihydrocarbyltin, or a carbonyl moiety, and the catalyst is a catalyst capable of abstracting the group Y from the second moiety. The reaction can be used to create a polyarylether polymer.
