    Abstract: A steering column is provided for a motor vehicle, which can be moved within a predetermined adjustment range, and in the event of a crash can be shifted beyond the predetermined adjustment range into a crash position, with a steering column cladding and a latching device for locking the steering column into the respective position. The latching device has a manually activatable actuating element, and the steering column cladding and actuating element can be positioned relative to each other in such a way by moving the steering column into the crash position that the actuating element is or can be supported against the steering column cladding as it is being fixed in place with the steering column locked.
