    Abstract: The invention discloses a novel significantly improved carrier protein for pharmaceutical applications: metal ion-stabilized alfa-fetoprotein, AFP. The stabilized AFP serves as a novel universal drug delivery vehicle in formulating drugs to be targeted to cancer cells. Various transition metal ions form non-covalent adducts with AFP and stabilize it against physical and chemical factors in physiological fluids while not affecting its ability to target to AFP receptor-expressing cells.
