  • Patent number: 7024048
Abstract: Briefly, in accordance with one embodiment on the invention, a method of compressing a data set includes the following. In multiple passes, each data signal in the data set is categorized into a category of a predetermined set, and, for selected categories of the predetermined set, the data signals for that category are coded using a codebook for that category. Briefly, in accordance with another embodiment of the invention, a method of decompressing a compressed data set includes the following. For compressed data signals in the data set in one category of a predetermined set of categories, a signal associated with the particular category is employed for the compressed data signal, and, for selected categories of the predetermined set, the compressed data signals for that category are decoded using a codebook for that category.

  • Patent number: 6215908
Abstract: An apparatus to perform symmetric filtering image compression is provided. The apparatus includes an N-element shift circuit, that has N shifting blocks (SB), to store and shift data elements. Each data element represents a pixel of an image. The apparatus also includes a first plurality of adder circuits to add data elements from a first plurality of pairs of SBs of the N SBs. The apparatus further includes a second plurality of adder circuits to add data elements from a second plurality of pairs of SBs of the N SBs. Additionally, the apparatus includes a first plurality of multiplier circuits, to multiply by corresponding low pass coefficients results of additions performed by the first plurality of adder circuits. The apparatus also includes a second plurality of multiplier circuits, to multiply by corresponding high pass coefficients results of additions performed by the second plurality of adder circuits.

  • Patent number: 5910783
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus for performing encoding employing a pseudo-barrel shifting technique. An encoder is provided with a buffer of at least twice a maximum symbol size. The encoder enables a window of bits in the buffer to be written during any time period. A steering circuit in the encoder steers valid data bits of an incoming symbol into appropriate enabled bit locations in the buffer. A read-out circuit in the encoder reads a data block of the maximum symbol size from the buffer after a write causes a boundary crossing in the buffer.
