    Abstract: A method and system for managing invoices offering dispute handling capabilities is provided. The electronic invoice management system includes a biller machine and a customer computing unit interconnected by a data network. The biller machine includes an invoice generation unit and a dispute resolution unit. The dispute resolution unit is linked to a dispute history data structure holding a plurality of groups of records, each group being associated to a corresponding customer entity. Each record includes reasons a prior invoice produced by the invoice generation unit was disputed by a customer entity. The dispute resolution unit is responsive to a message received from the customer computing unit over the data network and representative of reasons to dispute a new invoice to locate the group of records corresponding to the given customer entity associated to the customer computing unit. A record is created from the message and then stored in the dispute history data structure for future use.

An invoice is generated at a biller entity and is made electronically available to a customer entity. Users associated to the customer entity are enabled to complete respective stages of a multi-stage invoice handling process. The users transmit data elements indicating that respective stages of the multi-stage invoice handling process have been completed. Granting of payment of the invoice is detected at the biller when the data elements are received at the biller and indicate that the multi-stage invoice handling process has been completed.

    Abstract: A method and system for handling a given invoice generated at a biller and destined to a customer entity is provided. First and second permission levels are provided at the biller and are associated to first and second respective users of the customer entity. The first permission level allows the first user to process invoices of a first type characterized by amounts in a first range of amounts and the second permission level allows the second user to process invoices of a second type characterized by amounts in a second range of amounts. Either one of the first user and the second user is enabled to process the given invoice over a network on the basis of their associated permission levels.
