  • Publication number: 20070270660
Abstract: A system and method for determining a location of an orthopaedic medical device includes a controller and an array of antennas. The array of antennas includes a number of coplanar antennas and one or more additional antennas positioned non-coplanar relative to the coplanar antennas. The coplanar and non-coplanar antennas may be directional antennas. The orthopaedic medical device includes a wireless transmitter circuit configured to transmit a wireless signal and may be coupled to a bone of the patient, an orthopaedic implant, or an orthopaedic surgical tool. The controller is electrically coupled to the array of antennas and configured to determine a location of the orthopaedic medical device based on output signals received from the antennas in response to the wireless signal.

  • Publication number: 20070239481
Abstract: A system and method for managing patient-related data includes transmitting a power signal to an orthopaedic implant, receiving implant identification data from the orthopaedic implant, and retrieving patient-related data from a database based on the implant identification data. The method may also include receiving security code data and determining the validity of such security code data prior to the retrieving the patient-related data from the database. The method may further include updating an electronically-stored patient queue based on the patient-related data, assigning a patient room to a patient identified by the patient-related data, and transmitting the patient related data to a client machine located in the patient room and/or a portable media device.

  • Publication number: 20070238982
Abstract: A system, apparatus, and method for monitoring kinematic motion of a patient includes a patient exercise machine, an array of directional antennas coupled to a frame of the patient exercise machine, and a controller. The array of directional antennas includes a number of coplanar directional antennas and one or more additional directional antenna positioned non-coplanar with respect to the coplanar directional antennas. The controller is electrically coupled to the array of directional antennas and configured to determine a location of a wireless transmitter coupled to the patient based on output signals received from the directional antennas in response to a wireless signal transmitted by the wireless transmitter. The controller may also be configured to determine a location of one or more bones of the patient based on the location of the wireless transmitter.

  • Publication number: 20070239282
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting implant data includes an orthopaedic implant, a wireless receiver, and a processing circuit electrically coupled to the wireless receiver. The orthopaedic implant is configured to transmit implant identification data and implant sensor data to the wireless receiver in response to a power signal. The orthopedic implant may transfer the data over, for example, a wireless network. The processing circuit receives the implant identification data and the implant sensor data from the wireless receiver and is configured to retrieve patient-related data from a database based on the implant identification data. The processing circuit may also be configured to update a patient queue, assign a patient room to a patient, and/or transmit the patient-related data and the implant sensor data to a client machine located in the patient room.
