Abstract: A system enables dynamic linking between a variety of video formats including television broadcasts, web pages, and video displays which are stored on magnetic or optical media. Each frame of the video information is identified together with a plurality of locations within that frame. The locations selected by the user for example using a pointing device is then used to access associated information either within the system itself or on an external system. Thus, in some embodiments of the present invention, any item on a given frame may be linked initially or thereafter to other information within or without the particular system containing that information.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for capturing future instances of a song or a television show or the like. Responsive to a user activating a trigger, typically during the middle of the song or show, the system stores a clip and thereafter begins to monitor one or more channels or stations, attempting to locate that clip, such as by using DSP techniques. Upon finding the clip, the beginning and ending points of the song or show are identified, and the song or show is saved. Hunting may continue, to find a best available version of the song or show, such as one having the best noise characteristics.

Abstract: A platform installed on a rafter or joist provides stability and improved safety in construction-related settings. The platform may be sized according to the specific rafters, and in some embodiments the platform may span two or more rafters. A non-slip surface on top of the platform improves traction for the user.

An embodiment of a method comprises receiving a blackout request for a communication device; enabling a blackout mode for the communication device; modifying a signal for incoming calls or messages while the blackout mode is enabled; and at the end of a time period, automatically deactivating the blackout mode.

Abstract: A sports trivia board game includes a game board having a substantially planar top surface and indicia thereon for illustrating a baseball field. The game board further includes a six-sided die, a plurality of playing cards for providing trivia questions for players to ask one another, and a mechanical mechanism for displaying a player's ball and strike count. The board game further includes a plurality of game pieces including upper and lower portions and a plurality of spring members for connecting the upper and lower portions to each other. When select ones of the plurality of game pieces are moved across the game board, the upper portion of a game piece is thereby caused to oscillate about the spring member. The board game further includes a plurality of score pads, a plurality of writing utensils, and a reusable scoreboard having a dry-erase surface for keeping track of a player's score.

Abstract: A variety of performance control mechanisms are disclosed, allowing a user of a processor-based system to adjust performance criteria such as processing speed and fan speed. A performance control apparatus includes one or more user-accessible knobs and a display. The knob(s) enable the user to select from a variety of processor and fan speed settings. Other performance-related criteria may also be controlled using the knobs. The display communicates the effect of a change in performance criteria in a manner useful to the user. A performance control application program enables the user to independently pre-select performance criteria for each application program or group of application programs. A performance control icon provides the ability to select performance criteria from within an application program.

Abstract: An illuminated, translucent dispenser for liquid soap. Illumination is provided by an electric lamp embedded within or beneath the liquid. The illumination means may be part of the dispenser or a base upon which the dispenser can be placed. The illumination means may be battery-powered. In one embodiment, the dispenser is configured as a night-light.

Abstract: A digital video editing system uses a graphical user interface which facilitates the selection of a video sequence of interest and its representation in a conveniently visualized form. Through the graphical user interface, the user may select a starting frame, a time interval, and a number of frames within the time interval which may be represented by thumbnail depictions of selected video frames. Once the video sequence is represented by a selected sequence of video frames over a selected interval, the user can then use editing techniques to manipulate the portions of the video sequence represented by the thumbnail depictions.

Abstract: A residential phone system allows for local control of call features from any phone extension. The phone system may include a microcontroller that communicates along the phone lines at a non-utilized frequency to several extension phones in a residence. The microcontroller permits each phone to control call features such as call waiting, conference calling, paging, or other features. A control box may be included at any or all of the extension phones to provide a convenient user interface to access the call features.

Abstract: A retractable tape measure wherein the tape is adapted with a set of inside measure distance indicators which factor in the longitudinal external dimension of the housing. The user can take a direct inside measure reading from the tape, without having to add in the dimension of the housing. The housing can be any desired size, without regard for whether its length is an easy-to-add number such as an integer. The tape may have separate marks and distance indicators for inside measurements than for outside measurements.

Abstract: In some embodiments an apparatus includes mouse features and remote control unit features. The mouse features include surface based navigation such that a movement of the apparatus relative to another object is translated into electronic signals. Abstract: A system and method for adult URL pre-screening. A URL request made by a child on a first computer is received by a gatekeeper. The gatekeeper compares the requested URL to URL entries in an approved URL table. If the requested URL is found in the approved URL table, permission is granted for enabling the child on the first computer to browse a Web page associated with the requested URL. If the requested URL is not found in the approved URL table, the gatekeeper accesses the Web page associated with the requested URL, generates a thumbnail of the Web page, and alerts a parent/guardian operating the second computer via an alert icon. The parent/guardian may view the thumbnail of the Web page by placing their mouse over the alert icon. The thumbnail includes a set of approval options from which to allow the parent/guardian to approve or deny access of the Web page for the child on the first computer to browse.

Abstract: Collaborative work on an interactive system is facilitated by accurately capturing and displaying information on an interactive system, wherein multiple users may work together for supplying and receiving information on a common writing surface. A whiteboard device is provided to project an image on desk surface. The present invention enables each user to have at least two display areas to work on.

Abstract: A disposable picnic plate having an outer lip which extends downward until it is substantially coplanar with the flat, food-carrying center of the plate. When the plate is placed on a flat surface such as a picnic table, the lip is substantially in contact with the flat surface, reducing the wind's ability to get under the plate and lift or throw it.

Abstract: Non-GPS based navigation may be implemented by a cellular network service provider. The service provider may have data regarding a cellular radiotelephone's location within its coverage area. Geographic data for the cell phone's location may be obtained from a geographic database. Accordingly, navigational assistance may be provided to the user of the cellular radiotelephone through the interplay between the provider, telephone and geographic database. Additionally, the telephone may have a database storing telephone number-address pairs. Thus, when the user of the telephone inputs a telephone number as destinational information, the address corresponding to that phone number may be the destination location to which the user is traveling.
