  • Publication number: 20040084900
Abstract: A coupled version of a threaded connection 10 includes first threads 16, 38 and second threads, 20, 34 on both elongate tubulars 14, 30 and a coupling 45. An integral joint version 50 preferably includes a first and second tapered threads 58, 60 on each of the connected tubular bodies 54, 56. The coupling preferably includes a dope entrapment cavity in one of the connected tubulars between the first and second threads. A tapered metal seal surface is provided preferably between the first and second threads. The second thread in a preferred embodiment is a hook thread with a negative rake angle. In another embodiment, the pin ends of a coupled connection may engage, with seals provided between the first and second threads on each tubular.

  • Publication number: 20030224422
Abstract: A general method for identifying biological targets for improving currently available therapies is provided. Target genes and their expression products are identified based on their response to therapy as determined through pre- and post-therapy expression profiles. In another aspect, differences in expression profiles between responsive and nonresponsive patients are taken into account to identify potential new targets for the development of novel medications or treatments. The invention also provides methods for comparing therapies to predict which will have the best therapeutic efficacy and/or the least potential deleterious. The methods taught are specifically applied to identify targets for improving treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

  • Publication number: 20030191899
Abstract: A method determines ion beam emittance, i.e., the beam current density based on position and angle, in a charged particle transport system. The emittance is determined from variations in the current measured in a slot Faraday or sample cup as a straight-edged mechanism traverses the beam upstream of the sample cup in a direction perpendicular to the orientation of the slot Faraday and the straight-edged mechanism, which also can be the direction in which the emittance is determined. An expression in terms of the beam current density can be determined for the derivative of the sample current with respect to position of the mechanism. Depending on the angular spread of the beam reaching the sample cup, the density can be determined directly from the derivative, or can be determined using a least squares analysis of the derivative over a range of mechanism positions.

  • Patent number: 6609735
Abstract: Threaded and coupled pipe connections are provided with a number of design features that increase resistance of the connection to fatigue failure from cyclical side loading. The features acting alone or in combination include the provision of a pin thread that is formed along a single taper and that vanishes at the surface of the pipe. The coupling engages the pin such that the threaded area of the coupling engages all of the pin threads and extends beyond the vanish point of the pin threads at the optimum coupling makeup position. The threads of the coupling and pipe may engage along both the stab and load flanks to distribute the side loading. The external surface of the coupling may be tapered from the center toward each coupling end to reduce the stiffness ratio of the connection, and the ends or faces of the coupling may be reduced in radial thickness to prevent coupling splitting.

  • Patent number: 6581980
Abstract: The surface areas available for absorbing compressive loading of a threaded connection are increased by increasing the engaged area of a torque shoulder in the connection and by reducing the spacing between the stab flanks of the threads. The areas are increased by increasing the dimensions of the components and by decreasing the machine tolerances permitted in manufacturing the components. The gap in the connection adjacent the torque shoulder is reduced so that the contact surface area of the torque shoulder is increased while the close proximity of the surrounding cylindrical walls of the connection reduces voids that can receive plastic deformation of the torque shoulder corners. The surfaces adjacent the torque shoulder are cylindrical in shape rather than being tapered to reduce machining costs and increase the speed of manufacture of the connection.

  • Publication number: 20030082333
Abstract: Sheets (3) have a narrow margin (3a) which are the first part of the sheet to enter nip rollers (5 and 7). This concentrates the pressure of the nip rollers on the narrow margin to assure a firm grip without slippage. Once the sheet is moving, continuing movement without slippage is assured from the momentum. This is particularly useful when the nip rollers are fixing rollers which are oiled to minimize toner transfer and when the sheet is a smooth transparency.

  • Patent number: 6468393
Abstract: Speckle-patterned paper is produced on the paper machine without the use of printing techniques by first preparing speckle-forming material and then introducing this into a contrasting color papermaking furnish. Paper is then made from the speckle-containing furnish in the normal way. The speckle-forming material is produced either by agglomerating a mixture of papermaking fibre, particulate pigment and, preferably, a latex or other binder or by dry comminution of cellulose fibre aggregates in the form of paper or entangled fibre clumps.

  • Publication number: 20020081598
Abstract: The invention relates to methods for detecting genetic polymorphisms in an organism, particularly to the detection of genetic polymorphisms that are due to multiple distal nucleotide polymorphisms within a gene. Methods are provided for determining the haplotype structure of a gene, or other contiguous DNA segment, having two or more nucleotide polymorphisms that are separated by kilobases of DNA. The methods involve the use of PCR amplification and DNA ligation to bring the nucleotide polymorphisms on a particular allele of the gene into close proximity to facilitate the determination of haplotype structure.

  • Patent number: 6409175
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for obtaining a secure mechanical connection and a pressure-tight seal in the overlapping area of two telescoping tubular bodies. The two bodies, including the overlapping area, are radially expanded to increase the inside diameter of the bodies. The expansion forces an annular seal in the overlapping area into a pressure-sealing engagement between the bodies. A string of pipe assembled from joints secured to each other by telescoping, threadedly engaged expanded pin and box connections may be radially expanded into a surrounding well bore to provide a cased well having an internal diameter greater than the original internal diameter of the pipe string. The seal in the connection comprises an annular elastomeric seal ring and an annular Teflon spacer ring carried in a specially dimensioned groove formed in either the box or the pin, or both members of the connection.
