Patent number: 4955851Abstract: A transmission has torque converter with an impeller, primary and secondary turbines and a stator. In a first planetary gear set the carrier is connected to the primary turbine, the sun gear is connected to the secondary turbine and the ring gear is connected to a friction clutch. This friction clutch is used in the first and last forward driving phases and in reverse. A second planetary gear set has a second carrier connected to the output shaft and a second ring gear connected to the first carrier. A brake is connected to the friction clutch and to the second sun gear for low forward speed range. A second friction clutch locks up the second planetary gear in high speed. A one-way clutch connected to the stator provides phase differentiation in all forward speed ranges. A third friction clutch between the impeller and second turbine is required in conjunction with the first and second clutches to provide the final driving phase.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1988Date of Patent: September 11, 1990Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: John Arzoian, Shan Shih, Edward G. A clutch locks up the second planetary gear set in drive operation. The one-way clutch is centrifically disabled before and during drive operation.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1985Date of Patent: April 24, 1990Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: Edward G. Patent number: 4745822Abstract: A low power electric motor slowly leads a spring, which rapidly operates a two speed axle shift. An electric motor drives a nonreversing worm gear which engages a gear rack on a shaft. The shaft supports a caged spring. The motor moves the shaft, compressing the spring against one end of the cage, storing energy required for shifting. A solenoid piston holds the cage in position. When the shift is desired, the solenoid is tripped, the piston is raised and the spring moves the cage. An arm on the cage moves the shift lever. The solenoid piston engages the opposite detent in the cage and holds the cage in the new position. As the cage arrives at the new position, a lug trips a microswitch which completes a circuit to operate the motor in the reverse direction. The motor worm slowly drives the gear which slowly drives the rack to move the shaft in the reverse direction, compressing the spring against the opposite end of the cage.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1985Date of Patent: May 24, 1988Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: Edward G. Patent number: 4198060Abstract: A pad for wiping the surface of a high-density information disc wherein information is recorded in a groove on the surface of the disc, comprises a plurality of fibers, projecting from a backing element and having ridged outer surfaces. The diameter of each of the fibers is greater than the width of the groove, while the width of at least some of the ridges is narrower than the width of the groove. One wiping method involves manually bringing the pad's fibers into contact with the grooved surface of the disc while establishing relative motion therebetween. In an alternative method, the wiping function is automatically implemented in a disc player by means mounted on the player lid for bringing the pad's fibers into and out of contact with the grooved surface of a disc carried by a rotating turntable, responsively to the travel of a signal pickup carriage.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1976Date of Patent: April 15, 1980Assignee: RCA CorporationInventors: Frederick L. Patent number: 3939081Abstract: In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention a load supporting lubricant is formed by combining from about 40% to about 60% by volume of a petroleum grease with the balance being small, hard, uniformly sized, steel spheres dispersed throughout the grease. The diameter of the spheres should be within the range of from about 1/2 to about 3/4 millimeters (hereinafter mm) to achieve the minimum coefficient of static friction which is typically about 0.001 or less. When disposed between slidably engaged surfaces, each of said spheres is free to roll at random as one surface moves relative to the other.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1975Date of Patent: February 17, 1976Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Arnold O. DeHart, Richard C. Rosenberg, Edward G. Trachman
