  • Patent number: 8821112
Abstract: A variable geometry turbine comprises a turbine wheel supported in a housing for rotation about a turbine axis. The housing defines an annular inlet passage around an inducer portion of the turbine wheel and an outlet passage including a tubular wall disposed around an exducer portion of the turbine wheel; the inlet passage is defined between first and second radial inlet surfaces, one of the inlet surfaces being defined by a moveable wall member and the other of the inlet surfaces being defined by a facing wall of said housing. The moveable wall member is moveable relative to the facing wall of the housing along the turbine axis to vary the size of the inlet passageway. The moveable wall member is displaceably mounted within an annular cavity defined between the tubular wall and a surrounding wall of the housing.

  • Patent number: 8696307
Abstract: A variable geometry turbine comprises a turbine wheel supported in a housing for rotation about a turbine axis. An exhaust gas inlet passageway is defined between a shroud and a wall of a nozzle ring. The shroud is moveable in the axial direction to vary the size of the inlet passageway. The nozzle ring has an array of vanes that extends across the inlet passageway. An array of openings is provided in the shroud for receipt of the array of vanes. The shroud is part of a substantially annular axially moveable sleeve that is slidably disposed on an annular supporting wall. At least one biasing member is disposed between the moveable sleeve and the support and is designed to apply a circumferentially distributed force in the radial direction so as to maintain concentric alignment of the supporting wall and the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 8291703
Abstract: A variable geometry turbine has a gas inlet chamber and a gas flow inlet passage downstream of the inlet chamber and upstream of said turbine wheel. The inlet passage is defined between a moveable first wall and a second wall and an actuator is operable to control displacement of the first wall in order to vary the size of the gas flow inlet passage. A piston member defining the first wall or being connected to it is received in a piston chamber and serves to move the first wall as a result of displacement of the piston member in the piston chamber. A bypass passage defined in the housing and extends between the piston chamber and a location in the turbine upstream of the inlet passage for delivering gas to the piston chamber. The bypass passage is disposed such that gas introduced through the bypass passage pressurizes the chamber and applies a force to displace the piston member in a direction that causes the first wall to move towards the second wall.

  • Patent number: 7628580
Abstract: A variable geometry turbine comprises a housing defining a chamber within which a turbine wheel is mounted. The chamber has an annular inlet having a width defined between side walls of the housing. An array of vanes is mounted within the inlet, each vane having a length extending across the inlet, and a chordal length defined between leading and trailing vane edges. The vanes can be pivoted to adjust the effective cross-section area of the annular inlet. Each vane is pivotable between a first position in which the area of the inlet is a minimum and a second position in which the area of the inlet is a maximum. At least one of the side walls is configured so that clearance between the side wall and at least a portion of the adjacent chordal edge of each vane varies in a predetermined manner as the vane moves.

  • Publication number: 20060121161
Abstract: A party tray kit comprises a variety of ready-to-eat foods of sufficient quantity for a plurality of individuals that are sealed within a serving tray and ready to serve. The party tray kit also includes a carrier. The carrier includes a compartment for the serving tray and a compartment for a variety of condiments and relishes in ready-to-use packets. The party tray kit can be kept under refrigeration for a considerable period of time. In use, the party try kit is removed from refrigerated storage, the serving tray is removed from the kit and a releasable lidding film is removed from the serving tray. In one exemplary embodiment, the party tray kit may include a selection of cold-cuts and cheeses. When this embodiment is used, the serving tray may be presented to a gathering of individuals who can consume the various food items and condiments as desired.

  • Publication number: 20050249632
Abstract: Some food pathogens are not well controlled by lethality treatments followed by refrigeration. A food processing facility according to this invention reduces the likelihood that food pathogens will be able to enter the food processing facility, or spread should they be able to enter. The food processing facility is divided into a plurality of area, with different areas having different allowed actions that can be taken on the food product, different rules and/or procedures for persons who are allowed entry, and/or different levels of cleanliness. The food processing facility includes a plurality of separate rooms for processing the food product, each including separate food processing machines, air handling systems, drain systems and/or often-used supplies and tools. Different air pressures within different areas limit the possible movement of airborne food pathogens. Sanitizing stations are placed between various ones of the different areas.

  • Patent number: 6824389
Abstract: A method of selectively perfusing a non-preserved, non-heart beating cadaver with a perfusate to recreate vascular circulation in a cadaver as a mechanism for study of the vascular function, research and teaching of surgical procedures and general medical training. The arteries or veins of the cadaver are exposed, dissected, and flushed to remove clots and excess blood. A selected arterial tree of the cadaver is perfused with a solution via inflow through a point of access and outflow through at least one point of egress. The points of access and egress establish the limits of the circuit to be studied or used for testing.
