  • Patent number: 6747850
Abstract: A single-sided, notched write head is provided for writing narrow erase band servo tracks as well as a double-notched write head, and for writing data tracks better than a double-notched write head. The single-sided, notched write head writes a narrow erase band on the notched side and a wide erase band on the unnotched side. In one embodiment, only one side of the first pole piece layer is notched, and in another embodiment a first side of the first pole piece layer is notched more than a second side. By writing servo tracks only a fraction of the track width of the write head, a wide erase band region is overwritten so that a narrow erase band is on each side of the servo track. Data tracks are written with a narrow erase band on one side and a wide erase band on the other side. The wide erase band on one side of the data track allows more flexibility in spacing the read head from adjacent tracks.

  • Patent number: 6683759
Abstract: In the manufacture of a combined magnetic head, milling time for notching a first pole piece of the head's write element is reduced by constructing the first pole piece with a notching layer on a first pole piece layer, the notching layer having first and second corners adjacent first and second side walls of the second pole tip. The first pole piece layer has a wide lateral expanse, and the notching layer has a narrow lateral expanse. The width of the notching layer is preferably 0.2 &mgr;m to 2.0 &mgr;m wider than a target track width of the second pole tip. With this arrangement, the notching layer has first and second side walls that project 0.10 &mgr;m to 1.0 &mgr;m. laterally, beyond first and second side walls, respectively, of the second pole tip. The thickness of the notching layer is preferably between 0.1 &mgr;m to 1.0 &mgr;m. Accordingly, full notching of the notching layer can be achieved by milling a small-corner in a range of 0.10 &mgr;m by 0.10 &mgr;m to 1.0 &mgr;m by 1.

  • Patent number: 6655009
Abstract: A method of fabricating a second pole piece layer of a write head is constructed using first and second photoresist layers which are sensitive to light with different bandwidths. The second photoresist layer, which is on top of the first photoresist layer, is light exposed with light that excludes light that would change the molecular structure of the first or bottom photoresist layer. After light exposure and development of the second photoresist layer to provide an opening for yoke and back gap portions of the second pole piece layer, the first photoresist layer is light exposed with light that includes the light excluded in the light exposure step of the second photoresist layer. The light exposure of the first photoresist layer and its developing provides the first photoresist layer with an opening for electroplating the second pole tip of the second pole piece layer.

  • Patent number: 6570743
Abstract: The present invention extends the high resistance lead layers of a read head straight back into the head from each of the first and second edges of the read sensor. This lessens the length of each of the high resistance lead layers so that they do not have to be made thicker to satisfy resistance requirements. Accordingly, a lateral width of each high resistance lead portion along the ABS and a thickness thereof are chosen so as to minimize the thickness while yet satisfying the resistance requirements. Further, a method of making the first and second lead layers is provided that minimizes the thickness of the high resistance lead layers. Instead of constructing the high resistance lead layers first, the present method constructs the high resistance lead layers after defining a stripe height of the read sensor so that the lateral expanse of the high resistance lead layers is not altered by ion milling, which ion milling increases the resistance of the high resistance lead layers.

  • Patent number: 6542331
Abstract: The magnetic head of the present invention includes a P1 pole having an opening formed therethrough, and a P2 pole that is formed over the opening. A second magnetic pole tip is positioned relative to the first magnetic pole such that the first magnetic pole is symmetrically disposed relative to the second magnetic pole tip. Induction coils may be helically wound around portions of the first and/or second magnetic poles, or, alternatively, a planar, spiral induction coil may be fabricated for use with the first and second magnetic poles. An enhanced embodiment includes a first magnetic pole tip piece having a length that defines the throat length of the magnetic head and a thickness that increases the gap at rearward portions of the second magnetic pole tip of the magnetic head.

  • Patent number: 6325947
Abstract: A method for forming a merged thin film magnetic head having a first shield layer and a combined second shield and bottom pole piece layer arranged in a sandwich supporting a read sensor therebetween at the pole tip region. The combined second shield and bottom pole piece layer are magnetically coupled with the first shield layer at the pole tip end of the yoke region adjacent the read sensor, and overlaying and magnetically coupled with the first shield layer at the back gap region. A patterned opening is provided in the combined second shield and bottom pole piece layer at the yoke region thereof to expose the first shield layer and form a flat planarization surface thereon. A plurality of stacked thin film coil layers are provided in the patterned opening, and a top pole piece layer overlies the thin film coil at the yoke region, overlies the bottom pole piece at the pole tip region providing a pole tip and gap thereat, and overlies the bottom pole piece at the back gap region.

  • Patent number: 6221559
Abstract: The front edge of the a zero throat height (ZTH) defining insulation layer in a magnetic head is formed with a central portion which is centered with respect to a second pole tip with first and second lateral portions which are on each side of the central portion and parallel to the ABS. The central portion is recessed from the ABS a distance appropriate for defining the ZTH between the first and second pole pieces of the head and the first and second lateral edges are further recessed into the head so as to increase the volume of the overcoat layer between the ABS and the first and second lateral edges. The increased volume of the overcoat layer better absorbs stresses and strains due to shock loading and temperature so as to reduce cracking of the head at the ABS.

  • Patent number: 6163442
Abstract: A high moment bilayer first pole piece layer of a write head has high magnetic stability for promoting read signal symmetry of a read sensor of a read head. The bilayer first pole piece layer has a first layer of nickel iron and a second layer of iron nitride. The iron nitride has a high magnetic moment for conducting more flux per volume than the nickel iron first layer. In a first aspect of the invention, the nickel iron first layer is highly stabilized by providing it with a negative magnetostriction so that a stress induced anisotropy (H.sub.K) supports an intrinsic uniaxial anisotropy (H.sub.K) of the nickel iron first layer. The iron nitride second layer is formed directly on the nickel iron first layer so that by magnetic coupling the iron nitride second layer has significantly improved magnetic stability.

  • Patent number: 6122144
Abstract: A write head is provided that has an "I" shaped pole tip structure. Flux leakage between bottom corners of a top horizontal component to a bottom horizontal component of the "I" shaped pole tip structure is obviated by rounding or tapering the side edges of the top horizontal component as it recesses into the head from the ABS. The angle taken by each recessed side edge with respect to the ABS edge is less than 90.degree. so that flux concentrations at the corners are minimized and flux leakage from these corners to the bottom horizontal component is substantially eliminated. In another embodiment of the invention the top horizontal component is configured with a necked down portion between front and rear portions for minimizing flux saturation of other pole tip components.

  • Patent number: 6029339
Abstract: An inductive write head has a pole tip region between an air bearing surface (ABS) and a flare point, and a yoke region located between the flare point and a back gap. The write head includes first and second pole piece layers, wherein the second pole piece layer has first and second components. The first component extends from an ABS end, which is located at the ABS, to a recessed end which is located in the yoke region. The second component extends from a recessed end, which is spaced from the ABS, to the back gap. The second component interfaces with the first component in a stitched region so that the first component defines a pole tip in the pole tip region and the second component defines a yoke in the yoke region. A first insulation layer extends from a recessed end, which is spaced from the ABS, into the yoke region. The recessed end of the first insulation layer defines a zero throat height. The first component is sandwiched between the first insulation layer and the second component.
