Patent number: 5320279Abstract: An improved carton for superconcentrated detergent products. The carton includes front, rear and side panels and a cover. In one embodiment, the carton includes a liner which may be separate from the carton or integrated with the carton. The carton walls of the liner may include barrier materials. A hinge formed from perforated lines and score lines may be provided for the cover on the rear panel.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1993Date of Patent: June 14, 1994Assignee: Lever Brothers Company, Division of Conopco, Inc.Inventors: Edward J. Patent number: 5209394Abstract: A carton having two broad sides, two narrow sides and a tear tape spaced from the top and functionally extending through part or all of three of the sides but not extending completely through the fourth side. The fourth side is one of the narrow sides and functions as a hinge. When the tear tape is removed, the upper portions of three panels are separated from the lower aspects. The upper portions of the panels together with the top of the carton from a cover which pivots along the hinge formed by the fourth side. The carton is readily opened by means of the tear tape, yet product can be poured by grasping the carton's narrow end in the fashion of a traditional detergent carton. The carton may include a liner which extends to virtually the full height of the carton.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1991Date of Patent: May 11, 1993Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventors: Jeannine D. Patent number: 5145111Abstract: A carton blank and carton wherein an outer wall includes a die cut defining a cover and an inner wall disposed parallel to the cover inside the outer wall. The inner wall includes a die cut defining a removable plug. The plug is adhered to the cover so that when the consumer grasps the cover and opens it, the plug adheres to the cover and is removed from the inner wall, thereby creating a pouring opening. The plug preferably may be re-fit snugly within the pouring aperture when the cover is closed.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1989Date of Patent: September 8, 1992Assignee: Lever Brothers Company, Division of Conopco, Inc.Inventor: Edward J. Patent number: 5135159Abstract: A folding pour spout, particularly, for detergent cartons. The spout is formed from a spout blank preferably comprising a single thin sheet of plastic. The spout blank includes a first spout-forming panel having a pull tab, a second spout-forming panel including notches and a panel for attachment to a carton. The reduced thickness of the spout blank facilitates manufacturing of the carton.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1989Date of Patent: August 4, 1992Assignee: Lever Brothers Company, Division of Conopco, Inc.Inventors: Edward J. Giblin, James M. Gleason, John A. Hockey

Patent number: 5114013Abstract: This invention relates to a reclosable sealing carton with a thin polymeric coating. The package is characterized by an extended glue flap scored with a cut-out adapted to form a plug when adhered to the underside of a closure flap and a closure flap overlying the glue flap cut-out of the material of the closure flap. When the consumer opens the closure flap, the cut-out in the glue flap adheres to the closure flap thereby forming a reclosable plug. The closure also comprises a thin, top coating applied to the closure to provide increased durability and resistance to wet handling. The reclosable flap may further comprise a tab facilitating ease of lifting the closing and a recess cut-out of the side panel overlying the glue flap also facilitating ease of lifting.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1990Date of Patent: May 19, 1992Assignee: Lever Brothers Company, Division of CONOPCO, Inc.Inventors: Arnold Brown, Edward J. Giblin

Patent number: 5058748Abstract: An improved carton, particularly for concentrated or superconcentrated powdered products, cartons containing such products and carton blanks for making such cartons. The carton includes two side panels, a front panel, a rear panel, bottom closure flaps, top closure flaps, a handle attached to the side panels and spacing structures remote from the plane extending through the handle perpendicular to the front panel. When the carton blanks used for forming the carton are stacked, the spacing structures compensate for the extra thickness attributable to the handle and/or rivets. In one embodiment, the spacing structures comprise wings integral to a liner which can be folded back to increase the local thickness of the tubular carton blank. In a further embodiment, the spacing structures comprise embossments or debossments in the carton blank or liner.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1989Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Assignee: Lever Brothers Company, Division of Conopco Inc.Inventors: Edward J. Giblin, Jeannine D. Griffiths

Patent number: 5002222Abstract: The present invention is directed to a carton blank and a carton made therefrom which can be readily opened by consumers and yet which does not require extra thickening for balancing the carton or add appreciably to the amount of plastic present on the container. The invention comprises a carton blank including a die cut on one of the panels. The die cut intersects the upper score line of the panel at at least two points and creates an area of the panel which can be readily removed to form an opening. Preferably, the die cut extends beyond the score line onto the top minor flap adjacent the panel. Covering the die cut is a tape which adheres at least to the area within the die cut and by means of which the area of the die cut can be removed from the plane of the panel, thereby opening the carton.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1989Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventor: Edward J. Patent number: 4981256Abstract: A plastic closure for cartons which permits controlled dispensing of product. The closure is a fitment comprised of a thin material which is of such a minimal thickness that it does not tend to cause uneven stacking of the cartons when they are in flattened form, prior to their erection. The closure is generally thin enough to be accommodated within a carbon having either a 3- or 4- point rule score and normal score caliper balancing. The closure comprises a base member having an aperture, and a cover member which has a depending plug which fits within the aperture of the base when the cover member is in the closed position.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1990Date of Patent: January 1, 1991Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventors: Edward J. Giblin, John A. Hockey, James M. Gleason

Patent number: 4723860Abstract: A dispensing package is provided for delivery of liquids such as antiperspirants. The package has a fitment mounted upon a container holding liquid product. Within the fitment is a socket cradling an oval roller. At either ends of the socket are a pair of arms which communicate with the ends of the oval through a movement means permitting the oval to travel vertically within the socket. A spring with one or more upward protruding spuds is thrust from below through a floor base aperture and presses against the oval roller. Normally the spring pushes the spud through the aperture to seal the container. When the roller is pressed against a treating surface, e.g. skin, the roller pushes downward upon the spud thereby opening the floor base aperture permitting product to exit the container and be spread by the roller onto treatment surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1986Date of Patent: February 9, 1988Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventors: Edward J.
