  • Patent number: 4179888
Abstract: A vehicle engine accessory drive system is disclosed including a hydraulic fan motor and a power steering gear mechanism in series flow relationship. The vehicle power steering pump is the sole source of fluid for the system and has its flow control setting at a flow rate X, which is substantially greater than the flow rate Z required by the power steering gear. A temperature responsive bypass valve is connected in parallel across the fan motor and the bypass flow and motor outlet f1ow recombine, then flow to a steering gear flow control which communicates a flow rate Z to the steering gear mechanism and all fluid in excess of Z bypasses the steering gear, recombining with the output flow from the steering gear and returning to the pump inlet. This system provides a flow to the fan motor resulting in a fan speed-versus-engine speed similar to a "viscous curve".

  • Patent number: 4077279
Abstract: A differential gear mechanism of the side gear type includes the provision of an annular extension from one side gear which provides a housing and a bearing surface for the pinions at the differential. An oscillating weight member is carried by the annular extension. The member senses the occurrence of differential rotation between the side gears and actuates a locking mechanism upon the occurrence of a predetermined degree of differential rotation. The differential as disclosed comprises a transfer case operative to transfer power from the prime mover of a four wheel drive vehicle to its front and rear drive axles.

  • Patent number: 4060146
Abstract: A power steering mechanism especially for highway-type vehicles. The mechanism includes a worm defining an axial bore and an input shaft projecting into the bore and having a lost motion connection with the bore of the worm adjacent the output end of the worm. A valve is disposed at the output end of the worm with a gerotor motor disposed adjacent the valve. Rotation of the input shaft, relative to the worm, rotates the inner valve sleeve, relative to the outer valve sleeve, directing pressurized fluid to the gerotor motor. The gerotor motor includes an externally-toothed star member which orbits and rotates upon actuation of the motor. A dogbone has one end in splined engagement with the gerotor star and the other end in splined engagement with the worm to translate the orbital and rotational movement of the star into rotational movement of the worm. A torsion bar has one end in engagement with the steering wheel end of the input shaft and its other end fixed to the worm.

  • Patent number: RE29872
Abstract: A locking differential mechanism comprises a differential gear means including an input gear and a pair of output gears. A locking mechanism locks up the differential in response to a predetermined amount of differentiating action occurring. The locking mechanism functions to lock one of the output gears to the case of the differential. The actuator for actuating the locking mechanism to effect the lockup comprises an oscillating weight actuator mechanism.
