  • Patent number: 8065562
Abstract: Power-backup capabilities are provided by implementing a variety of different methods, systems and devices. According to one such implementation, a capacitive storage circuit is operated at a threshold voltage that is set to provide sufficient power to operate backup functions of a data storage device, and that is further selectively adjusted during a test period to maintain such sufficient power while also providing power to carry out test functions. In other implementations, the threshold voltage is set in response to operating characteristics of one or more of a data storage device to which backup power is to be provided and the capacitive storage circuit itself. The threshold voltage is reduced or otherwise maintained at a low level that is yet sufficient to supply appropriate power (e.g., thus maintaining the capacitive circuit at a voltage level that is about as low as possible, which can enhance operational characteristics of the capacitive circuit).

  • Patent number: 8009502
Abstract: Power-backup capabilities are provided by implementing a variety of different methods, systems and devices. According to one such implementation, an energy storage circuit is powered using a variable voltage controlled to limit the current draw from a power supply, to charge the energy storage circuit for providing backup power to a solid state drive (SSD) type of data storage arrangement. Certain applications involve controlling the power draw from the power supply, in response to feedback and/or power drawn from other circuits, as may be applicable to an initial startup of the energy storage circuit and/or the initial startup of a larger system in which the energy storage circuit is employed.

  • Patent number: 7910716
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide processes for the selection of HIV-1 subtype (clade) C isolates, selected HIV-1 subtype C isolates, their genes and modifications and derivatives thereof for use in prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines to produce proteins and polypeptides for the purpose of eliciting protection against HIV infection or disease. A process for the selection of HIV subtype isolates comprises the steps of isolating viruses from recently infected subjects; generating a consensus sequence for at least part of at least one HIV gene by identifying the most common codon or amino acid among the isolated viruses; and selecting the isolated virus or viruses with a high sequence identity to the consensus sequence. HIV-1 subtype C isolates, designated Du422, Du 151 and Du 179 (assigned Accession Numbers 01032114, 00072724 and 00072725, respectively, by the European Collection of Cell Cultures) are also provided.

  • Patent number: 7864930
Abstract: Methods, apparatus and computer-readable media for registering and retrieving contact information associated with a potential calling party. The registration method comprises receiving an originating address associated with the potential calling party, receiving contact information associated with the potential calling party and storing the originating address associated with the potential calling party in an originating address field of a record associated with the potential calling party and storing the contact information associated with the potential calling party in a contact information field of the record associated with the potential calling party. This increases the variety of contact information that can be left by the potential calling party, contributes to a greater efficiency with which the eventual called party may retrieve contact information associated with a voice mail message and also accelerates the process by which an actual calling party can leave contact information for the called party.

  • Publication number: 20100332863
Abstract: Power-backup capabilities are provided by implementing a variety of different methods, systems and devices. According to one such implementation, an energy storage device such as a capacitive storage circuit is powered relative to the powering of one or more additional circuits from a common power supply to limit the draw upon the power supply. Certain applications involve delaying or otherwise modifying the powering of the capacitive storage circuit, which may involve an initial startup of the capacitive storage circuit.

  • Publication number: 20100332858
Abstract: Power-backup capabilities are provided by implementing a variety of different methods, systems and devices. According to one such implementation, a data-storage device is implemented having a memory control circuit controlling non-volatile and volatile memory. An operating power circuit carries primary-operating power from the host-system to the memories and control circuitry. A backup power circuit includes energy-storage circuitry with one or more energy storage devices. An isolation-regulation circuit provides voltage regulation of power from the host-system and also isolates the host-system provided power from the energy storage devices. A regulation power circuit carries the regulated power from the isolation-regulation circuit to the energy storage devices.

  • Publication number: 20100306539
Abstract: A method and system for controlling distribution of content through a communications network uses a second, parallel network for delivery of a transaction indicia to a requesting party. The use of the parallel network enables the transaction indicia to be forwarded to the party independently of the communications network, thereby reducing the probability of a party fraudulently obtaining delivery of the content. Additionally, information associated with the parallel network can be used to restrict distribution of the content to parties within a predetermined domain, such as, for example, a geographical region. The content may be delivered to the party in an encrypted form, preferably using an encryption algorithm and key designed to enable decryption of the content on only the content delivery device from which the request for the content was originated.

  • Patent number: 7587033
Abstract: A method for execution by an owner of a mailbox in a voice mail system. The method comprises using an access device to access a voicemail message contained in the mailbox and entering a command instrumental in causing the voicemail message to be forwarded over a telephone network to a conversion entity. At the conversion entity, an electronic representation of the voicemail message is created and then the electronic representation of the voicemail message is rendered accessible to the owner of the mailbox, e.g., by sending an email message to a predetermined address. In this way, electronic representations of voicemail messages in a mailbox can be accessed by the owner of the mailbox using a device of choice, not necessarily the access device used initially to enter the command. Also, this functionality is achieved while allowing the voice mail system to remain a legacy voice mail system.

  • Publication number: 20080148373
Abstract: Systems and methods for unattended authentication of software applications to provide these applications with access to shared resources. A server password manager (SPM) module resident on a node also occupied by a requester software application requesting access to resources receives the requestor's request. The SPM module creates a request package containing the requestor's information as well as the node's identifying information. The request package is then transmitted to a credentials manager (CM) module in a CM node. The request package, encrypted by the SPM module with encryption keys previously generated by the CM module, is decrypted by the CM module. The contents are checked against data stored by the CM module regarding the SPM module and the requestor application when these were registered with the CM. If the data matches, then the CM provides credentials which are used to give the requestor application access to the requested resources.

  • Publication number: 20060112529
Abstract: Draft tube embedments of a hydroelectric turbine are removed for replacement and/or upgrading. Several shafts for saw wire access, forming a horizontal polygonal shape are drilled outside the draft ring and a circular slot cut below the bottom ring to meet the shafts. Shafts and slot encompass the embedments. Additional shafts are drilled for hoist slings. Generally radial cuts are made using diamond saw wires attached to saw wire machines from selected saw wire access shafts to the draft tube through the embedments. Back cuts are made between adjacent saw wire access shafts, again by diamond saw wires attached to saw wire machines, cutting the polygon into sections. Hoisting slings are passed down the hoisting sling shafts around the sections. The sections are then cut free by further back cuts and then hoisted from the draft tube. The method is quicker than conventional methods.
