Patent number: 6813150Abstract: A computer system comprises a host processor, a temperature sensor for sensing temperature in an enclosure of the system and one or more fans for cooling the enclosure. A service processor is provided for providing system management functions within the computer system. These include generating fan speed signals in response to temperature values detected by the temperature sensor, and generating a control signal. The system includes a fan controller for providing power for driving the fan or at least one of the fans in response to the fan speed signals generated by the service processor only when the fan controller also receives the control signal from the service processor. In the absence of the control signal from the service processor, the fan controller will increase the fan speed to a predetermined fan speed, for example maximum, in order to ensure that no damage occurs in the event of a service processor malfunction.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2002Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventors: James Edward King, Rhod James Jones

Patent number: 6738070Abstract: A method and an apparatus for retrieving a mipmap from memory. The method and apparatus provide an efficient method of determining the location of the desired mipmap in memory by storing the address of each row of mipmaps and calculating the offset from the start of the row to the desired mipmap. The mipmap is retrieved from memory at the location corresponding to the sum of the start address and the offset.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2002Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Daniel Alan Brokenshire, David Arthur Dick, Matthew Edward King, William B. Patent number: 6724312Abstract: A pest control system includes pest control devices installed about an area or building. These devices each include a bait member and a wireless communication circuit. The wireless communication circuit may be in the form of a passive RF tag that transmits information indicative of bait status and an identifier unique to each pest control device. The wireless communication circuit can be configured in a first assembly for detecting the presence of one or more pests and a second assembly for delivering a pesticide once pests are detected. The assemblies are interchangeable within a pest control device housing. The wireless communication circuit is connected to a sensor having an electrically conductive element that can be comprised of a nonmetallic material, such as a carbon-based ink. One or more connection members electrically couple the wireless communication circuit and the sensor. These members are comprised of an electrically conductive, elastomeric compound, such as a carbon-filled silicone rubber.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2000Date of Patent: April 20, 2004Inventors: Daniel Barber, Don Black, Edward King, Sterett Robertson

Patent number: 6697254Abstract: A computer system, for example a network server, comprises a service processor for providing system management functions for the system, and at least one peripheral component that communicates with, and/or is controlled by, the service processor via a communication or control line. The system includes a timer that is initialised by the service processor at a predetermined rate. If the timer is not initialised within a certain time period, it will reset the peripheral device to a different state, e.g. a quiescent state or one that is independent of the service processor. The timer is separate from the service processor and the service processor sends initialisation signals to the timer along the communication or control line.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2002Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventors: James Edward King, Stephen Richard Hanson

Publication number: 20040028073Abstract: A computer system, for example for use as a server, comprises a host processor, a service processor for providing system management functions within the computer system, and a user interface for receiving external commands and data for the service processor and/or the host processor, and for sending data from the service processor and/or the host processor. A device is provided for routing the commands and data to and from the user interface via the service processor only when the device receives a signal from the service processor. In the absence of the signal, the commands and data are sent between the user interface and the console interface bypassing the service processor. By this means, the host processor may be addressed even if the service processor malfunctions.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 9, 2002Publication date: February 12, 2004Inventors: James Edward King, Rhod James Jones

Patent number: 5695098Abstract: A spill and splash resistant safety paint bucket for supporting and transporting paints or other liquids is disclosed. The safety paint bucket includes a container for supporting the paint or other liquid and a self-closing lid constructed to be removably attached to the container. The container includes a belt clip attachment and shoulder strap attachment buttons so that the safety paint bucket can be attached to a belt or harness, or carried on an attached strap by an individual while maintaining both hands free to perform other tasks. The lid includes a fixed partition, a spring loaded flap, and a spring. When a brush or other applicator is inserted into the container through the top of the lid, the downward pressure applied to the brush or other applicator compresses the spring which allows the spring loaded flap to pivot away from the fixed partition. The opening thus created allows the brush or other applicator to reach the liquid contained below.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1995Date of Patent: December 9, 1997Inventor: Scott Edward King

Patent number: 4227661Abstract: The invention provides a latching mechanism including a pawl, a ratchet wheel having a recess engageable with the pawl to restrict rotation of the wheel in one direction and cam means associated with the wheel and operative on rotation thereof in said one direction to urge the pawl away from the recess. The pawl is biased solely by gravity to move toward the recess whereby to enable engagement in said recess. The gravity bias acting on the pawl will be insufficient to cause the pawl to be in a position to engage said recess when the angular velocity of the wheel is in excess of a predetermined latching velocity. The latching mechanism may be used in a winding apparatus for hose.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1978Date of Patent: October 14, 1980Inventors: William King, Edward King

Patent number: 4207472Abstract: A lumber inspection and optimization system is disclosed combining the speed of electro-optic scanning for flaw detection with electronic data manipulation and computation for optimizing the utilization of the lumber in accordance with an order entry list specifying the dimensions, grade and priority of boards desired to cut from each piece of lumber inspected by the system. The system receives input data from an order entry device and an electro-optical scanner. The digital scan data from the electro-optical scanner is electronically processed to form a flaw data buffer containing the edge location of all the detected flaws enlarged to compensate for defective material usually surrounding each flaw. Optimization of the material is accomplished by electronically comparing the order entry data with the location of the flaws in the flaw buffer to generate cut line data indicative of where the board is to be cut.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1978Date of Patent: June 10, 1980Assignee: The Bendix CorporationInventors: Jerome M. Patent number: 4069612Abstract: A pair of arms are pivoted together by one end thereof and normally urged apart by a heavy-duty spring. A flexible snare consists of a snare loop and a free or standing end passing through a ring on one end of the snare in a form of a running noose. The free end passes through an eye of the other end of one of the arms and is secured to a trigger lever pivotally mounted on the other end of the other arm. A trigger loop is pivoted to the one arm and in one position holds the trigger lever with the trap in the set position and engages the other arm with the trap in the locked position. When in the set position, a pull on the noose displaces the trigger lever slightly so that the spring pressure between the two arms springs the trap and tightens the noose.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1976Date of Patent: January 24, 1978Inventor: Lawrence Edward King
