  • Patent number: 5021135
Abstract: In a method for electrocoating an electrically conductive surface serving as an electrode, which method comprises passing an electrical current between the electrically conductive surface to be electrocoated and a counter electrode in contact with an electrodeposition bath comprising a synthetic resin ionically dispersed in an aqueous medium, wherein improvement comprises (a) adding a complexing agent, and then (b) removing at least a portion of the complexing agent along with metals coordinated therewith from the bath.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 17, 1989
Date of Patent: June 4, 1991
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Craig A. Wilson, Kurt G. Olson, Jeffrey G. Koren, Debra M. Longhini, Carol S. Dugan, Edward L. Jozwiak, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4297261
Abstract: Polymeric products are prepared by polymerizing in aqueous medium under addition polymerization conditions a dispersed phase of a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomer or mixture of polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of an at least partially neutralized adduct of a polyepoxide and a primary and/or secondary amine and which contains unsaturation. The polymeric products are useful in water-based coating compositions particularly for use in cationic electrodeposition.

Date of Patent: October 27, 1981
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
    Inventor: Edward L. Jozwiak, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4113598
Abstract: A method of preparing resinous vehicles in aqueous medium by addition polymerizing a material having CH.sub.2 .dbd.C< moieties with a partially neutralized reaction product of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride and polybutadiene is disclosed. The resinous vehicles are prepared in a manner such that they are useful for electrodeposition.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 7, 1977
Date of Patent: September 12, 1978
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Edward L. Jozwiak, Jr., Suryya K. Das
  • Patent number: 4108750
Abstract: A method of preparing resinous vehicles in aqueous medium by addition polymerizing a diene with a partially neutralized reaction product of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride and a drying oil is disclosed. The resinous vehicles are prepared in the presence of an oil-soluble free radical polymerization catalyst and have properties necessary for electrodeposition.
