  • Patent number: 4281111
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing cold water hydrating starch which, when hydrated in water, produces a short creamy textured paste, especially useful in instant pudding formulations. These properties are attained without the use of the classical types of polyfunctional crosslinking reagents such as epichlorohydrin, phosphorus oxychloride, acrolein, etc. This process comprises treating starch with from 0.1% to 1% chlorine (preferably 0.4-0.6%) as sodium hypochlorite to inhibit the starch, but not to degrade or depolymerize it, and then reacting the inhibited starch with an alkylene oxide to produce a hydroxypropyl starch having a degree of substitution of about 15.5% to about 18.5%.

  • Patent number: 4231803
Abstract: A gummed adhesive formulation is disclosed which contains as its major component a depolymerized waxy starch ester, preferably an oxidized waxy starch acetate or succinate. Quick tack properties imparted to tape by this formulation are superior to those resulting from an adhesive made from a thin boiling waxy starch and are comparable to those of animal glue at 11 lb/ream remoistening level.

  • Patent number: 4116740
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a water resistant adhesive composition for use in the manufacture of corrugated board and its preparation. The adhesive is prepared by using a thin boiling or modified waxy variety starch of a fluidity of at least 25 as a component in the gelatinized carrier portion of the adhesive. This produces a high solids carrier which results in a final adhesive of good stability whose use enables corrugated board to be produced at faster than normal rates. This adhesive is particularly useful to increase production rates of heavy weight and multiwall board.

  • Patent number: 4040862
Abstract: Process for preparing a thermal converting starch by reacting an alkaline hypochlorite oxidized starch with a water soluble aluminum salt. The treatment provides a starch product which when pasted at high temperatures will degrade to give a low viscosity material. The process includes the steps of slurrying oxidized starch in water and treating the oxidized starch with a water soluble aluminum salt.

  • Patent number: 4033914
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a waterproof and weather-resistant adhesive composition for use in the manufacture of corrugated board and its preparation. More specifically, it concerns the preparation of a water-resistant paperboard adhesive containing a resin and a primary, secondary or tertiary amine compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl groups of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or hydroxyalkyl groups of 1 to 3 carbon atoms. This improved starch base adhesive has superior viscosity stability, improved gel temperature, and excellent pot life stability compared to an adhesive made without aminohydroxy compound.

  • Patent number: 4014727
Abstract: This disclosure relates to an adhesive composition for use in the manufacture of corrugated board and its preparation. The adhesive is prepared by using a thin boiling or modified waxy variety starch of fluidity of 25 or greater as a component in the gelatinized carrier portion of the adhesive. This produces a high solids carrier which results in a final adhesive of good stability whose use enables corrugated board to be produced at faster than normal rates. This adhesive is particularly useful to increase production rates of heavy weight and multiwall board.

  • Patent number: 3973985
Abstract: Starch is prepared for use in the manufacture of paper products by reacting an alkaline hypochlorite oxidized starch with ammonium persulfate. The treatment provides a starch product which when pasted at high temperatures will degrade to give a low viscosity material. The process includes the steps of slurrying lightly oxidized starch in water and further oxidizing the starch with ammonium persulfate. When this starch is suspended in water and heated to pasting, it shows lower viscosities than other starches of comparable starting viscosities.

  • Patent number: 3970467
Abstract: This application describes a method of preparing starch-based corrugating adhesives which involves treating the wash water in flexographic printing processes to remove ammonium ions and subsequently reusing the water in preparing the adhesives. The preferred process includes the steps of separating the ink solids from the wash water, recovering a liquor, and removing ammonium ions from the liquor to condition the liquor for subsequent use in preparing corrugating adhesives.
