  • Patent number: 5597587
Abstract: An apparatus to manufacture a cellulose food casing including a nonderivatized cellulose film precipitated in tubular form from an extruded thermoplastic solution of cellulose and an amine oxide cellulose solvent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 29, 1995
Date of Patent: January 28, 1997
    Assignee: Viskase Corporation
Inventors: Myron D. Nicholson, Edward M. Kajiwara, Paul E. Ducharme, Jr., Merlan E. McAllister, Joseph R. Walta
  • Patent number: 5451364
Abstract: In a method for forming a cellulose tube suitable for use as a food casing, in which a solution of nonderivatized cellulose, tertiary amine N-oxide and water is extruded through a die gap and the extruded tube downwardly flowed through an air length while being internally cooled, and passed into a water bath, the tube transverse direction tensile strength is substantially increased by drawing the extruded tube through an air length of at least about six inches.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 10, 1994
Date of Patent: September 19, 1995
    Assignee: Viskase Corporation
Inventors: Paul E. Ducharme, Jr., Edward M. Kajiwara, Norman A. Portnoy
  • Patent number: 5426153
Abstract: A polymeric composition including a first copolymer of ethylene and a higher .alpha.-olefin having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, said first copolymer having a density of between 0.880 g/cc. and about 0.949 g/cc. and a melt index of between about 0.01 and about 100, present in the polymeric composition in a concentration of between about 60% and about 95% by weight; and a second copolymer of ethylene-vinyl acetate having a vinyl acetate content of at least about 28% by weight, based on the total weight of the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, said second copolymer present in a concentration of between about 5% and about 40% by weight, said percentages by weight based on the total weight of the polymeric composition. This polymeric composition is particularly useful when fabricated into a film, which has excellent impact strength.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 6, 1994
Date of Patent: June 20, 1995
    Assignee: Quantum Chemical Corporation
Inventors: Francis M. Mirabella, Stephen Imfeld, Michael L. Opacich, Edward M. Kajiwara
  • Patent number: 5367022
Abstract: Highly functional grafted polymeric products of a predominantly propylene polymeric composition containing a thermoplastic ethylene-propylene copolymer and a carboxylic acid or derivative grafting monomer and having a desirably low melt flow rate, adhesive blends containing such grafted polymeric products, and composite structures incorporating the adhesive blends are provided. The grafted polymeric product may be prepared by melt grafting in the presence of a free radical generating catalyst and the substantial absence of solvent under shear and at a temperature selected to minimize or avoid premature decomposition of the catalyst and vaporization losses of the catalyst and monomer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 7, 1992
Date of Patent: November 22, 1994
    Assignee: Quantum Chemical Corporation
Inventors: Webster W. Kiang, Edward M. Kajiwara, Diana C. Mattson
  • Patent number: 5277857
Abstract: A cellulosic food casing formed by extruding a nonderivatized cellulose solution composed of cellulose pulp and an amine solvent into a seamless tube, contacting the inner and outer surfaces of the seamless tube with a nonsolvent liquid to precipitate a tube of nonderivatized cellulose and thereafter contacting the same with a water soluble softener. Apparatus for forming the food casing and a food casing of nonderivatized cellulose also are disclosed.
