  • Patent number: 8557366
Abstract: A roofing shingle includes a buttlap portion with a butt edge and a headlap portion with a head edge. The roofing shingle includes a coated mat which is a roofing mat coated with an organic-based coating material. The roofing shingle also includes a water impermeable sheet adjacent to the coated mat. In one embodiment, the headlap portion of the coated mat is mostly replaced by the sheet. In another embodiment, the roofing shingle has a limited width. In a further embodiment, the roofing shingle is reduced in weight compared to a conventional shingle.

  • Publication number: 20110036290
Abstract: Systems for manufacturing national shingles are provided. The systems include the steps of establishing a standardized process for manufacturing shingles having standardized performance characteristics. The national shingles can be manufactured in more than one manufacturing facility, and further wherein the national shingles can be mixed on a common roof and provide a standardized performance.

  • Patent number: 7820237
Abstract: A system for manufacturing a granule covered roofing shingle includes establishing at least two sources of granules. A standardized process for manufacturing granules having a standardized appearance is then established, wherein a color of the granules from one of the sources of granules is substantially identical to the color of the granules from the others of the sources of granules, thereby defining at least one standardized granule color. Granules of the standardized granule color are then manufactured according to the standardized process. The manufactured granules are transported to at least one shingle manufacturing facility, and granule covered roofing shingles are then manufactured using the manufactured granules of the standardized granule color.

  • Patent number: 7765763
Abstract: This invention relates to an underlayment for use under a plurality of courses of roofing shingles. The underlayment includes a water impermeable membrane layer containing at least one flap extending horizontally across the membrane layer. The flap is movable between a flat position and a raised position. In the raised position, an upper edge of a roofing shingle can be positioned under the flap. The upper edge of the roofing shingle can then be subsequently overlapped by the flap when the flap is moved into the flat position. The flap can then subsequently be overlapped by another course of roofing shingles.

  • Publication number: 20100005745
Abstract: A roofing shingle is a composite sheet which includes a roofing substrate having a front side and a back side. An asphalt material impregnates the substrate and coats at least the front side of the substrate. A polymer film is attached to the back side of the substrate and forms a back surface of the roofing shingle. The polymer film was applied to the substrate in the form of a film. The roofing shingle does not include backdust on the back surface. The composite sheet is formed into the size and shape of the roofing shingle. A method of manufacturing roofing shingles includes continuously supplying a roofing substrate having a front side and a back side. An asphalt material is applied to the substrate so that it impregnates the substrate and coats at least the front side of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 4273685
Abstract: A rubber modified asphalt composition prepared by reacting a bituminous material with a polymerizable aromatic monomer and a rubbery polymer whereby the rubbery polymer is chemically integrated with the asphalt. The rubber modified asphalt compositions of this invention can be used in the treatment of glass fibers as well as in road paving applications, roofing applications and the like.
