Publication number: 20240416410Abstract: A cooling pad for a belt casting system includes a first nozzle arrangement and a second nozzle arrangement. In some embodiments, the first nozzle arrangement includes an elongated nozzle assembly that includes a base defining a receiving area, a first insert positionable within the receiving area, and a second insert positionable within the receiving area. The first insert and the base together define a first elongated dispensing slot. The second insert is adjustable relative to the first insert, and the second insert and the base together define a second elongated dispensing slot. In various embodiments, the second nozzle arrangement includes a plurality of multi-position nozzles, each movable between a base position and an offset position such that the heat transfer rate may be locally controlled across the cooling cavity.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2024Publication date: December 19, 2024Applicant: Novelis Inc.Inventors: Heinz BECKER, Edward S. LUCE, Kevin M. GATENBY, Dennis P. CHADWICK, Simon William BARKER

Patent number: 7250221Abstract: A method of producing a clad metal ingot suitable for rolling to form a clad metal sheet, and the clad metal ingot so produced. The method involves providing a solid core ingot having an upper side with a rolling face thereon having cavities extending inwardly into the ingot from the rolling face. All or all-but-one of the cavities are blocked against molten metal entry and casting cores extending outwardly from the rolling surface are provided in alignment with the cavities. Molten cladding metal is cast on the rolling face around the casting cores to produce a composite ingot and the casting cores are removed to produce voids in the cladding layer, and the cavities are unblocked. The resulting interconnected cavities and voids are filled with a molten metal to form cast-in-place metal lugs keying or pinning the cladding layer to the core ingot.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2006Date of Patent: July 31, 2007Assignee: Novelis Inc.Inventors: Jeff Ballyns, Don Doutre, Kevin Gatenby, Eric Lees, Edward S. Luce, Peter Wales, Gijsbertus Langelaan

Patent number: 5401694Abstract: A method for manufacture of Group IVB metal carbide comprising a carbide of a metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, hafnium and zirconium ceramic composites is provided wherein a permeable mass of filler and carbon is contacted with a molten Group IVB metal. The molten metal is maintained in contact with the permeable mass for a sufficient period to infiltrate the permeable mass and to react the molten metal with the carbon source to form a Group IVB metal carbide composite. The permeable mass may comprise a Group IVB metal carbide, or other inert filler, or a combination of filler materials.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1993Date of Patent: March 28, 1995Assignee: Lanxide Technology Company, LPInventors: Adam J. Gesing, Edward S. Luce, Narashima S. Raghavan, Danny R. White
