Patent number: 8881148Abstract: Methods, systems, and products are disclosed for saving unsaved user process data in one or more logical partitions (‘LPARs’) of a computing system, the computing system having installed upon it a hypervisor for administering the LPARs, each LPAR supporting an operating system, each operating system supporting one or more user processes, that include: detecting, by the hypervisor, a predefined event that the hypervisor interprets as an indication that unsaved data of user processes for at least one LPAR should be saved; transmitting, by the hypervisor in response to detecting the predefined event, a save instruction to the operating system supported by the LPAR; and instructing, by the operating system in response to receiving the save instruction, each user process supported by the operating system to save any unsaved data.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2012Date of Patent: November 4, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CoporationInventors: Joel D. Diaz, Kevin S. Stansell, Edward V. Zorek, Sr.

Patent number: 8631251Abstract: A system includes an operating system, first hardware, second hardware, and a system management controller, the latter which also may be considered an integrated management module or a baseboard management module. The first hardware executes the operating system and is under control of the operating system. The operating system causes the first hardware to enter a first reduced power state. The second hardware is different than the first hardware and is not under control of the operating system. The system management controller is implemented by the second hardware. In response to the operating system causing the first hardware to enter the first reduced power state, the system management controller causes the second hardware to enter a second reduced power state corresponding to the first reduced power state. The first reduced power state may be a more-power-conserving reduced power state than the second reduced power state.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 2009Date of Patent: January 14, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Edward V. Zorek, David P. Harrigan, Kevin S. Stansell, Jeremy M. Savoy

Publication number: 20100077128Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention address deficiencies of the art in respect to virtualization and provide a novel and non-obvious method, system and computer program product for monitoring and managing memory used in a virtualized computing environment. In this regard, a method for monitoring and managing memory used by a virtual machine in a virtualized computing environment can include counting page fault occurrences in a guest operating system (OS) executing in the VM, pinning additional physical memory to the VM along with initiating a hot-add event to the guest OS executing in the VM, responsive to exceeding a page fault allowance threshold in order to mitigate system degradation in the VM based on page fault occurrences.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 22, 2008Publication date: March 25, 2010Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Kevin S. Stansell, Edward V. Zorek, SR.
