  • Patent number: 9106414
Abstract: Digital content, particularly high volume digital content, such as newspapers or e-books are transmitted to an electronic device such as a handheld book reader over available bandwidth in a commercial FM radio station, private radio station, television station, or other one-way transmission system. A particular content item may be periodically rebroadcast along with other content on a rotating basis. GPS receivers and location-oriented databases may be used to allow the electronic device to find local broadcast outlets for the digital content when relocated to a new area. When no one-way transmission system is available or when packets of the high volume content are missing, a two-way communication system such as cellular (e.g. 3G or 4G systems), WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, etc. may be used to download all or part of the high volume content. Encryption schemes may be used to selectively authorize use of both electronic devices and content.

  • Publication number: 20070282687
Abstract: A method and apparatus for redeeming an economic incentive is described. One illustrative embodiment receives in a portable electronic device an economic incentive associated with a merchant; displays the economic incentive on a display of the portable electronic device; and transmits over a network a message from the portable electronic device to a computer associated with the merchant in response to a user's selection of the displayed economic incentive, the message indicating a request by the user for the economic incentive to be applied to a user purchase automatically by a point-of-sale computer of the merchant upon authentication of the user by the point-of-sale computer during a subsequent visit of the user to a store of the merchant.

  • Publication number: 20070279315
Abstract: An apparatus and method for displaying content on a portable electronic device is described. One illustrative embodiment acquires in a portable electronic device content to be displayed on the portable electronic device; displays the content on a composite display of the portable electronic device, the composite display including a plurality of separate display panels and being capable of being folded and unfolded into a plurality of configurations; and configures the composite display such that any two adjacent display panels of the composite display, when arranged so as to be in the same plane, are substantially flush along their adjacent edges to emulate the appearance of a continuous display across the adjacent edges.

  • Patent number: 6879996
Abstract: The method and apparatus described herein provides a system for displaying personal information management (PIM) data on a personal digital assistant (PDA). The PIM data may be shared by multiple users and modified at the PDA displaying the data, at another PDA, and/or at a personal computer. When the same data field is changed by more than one device, the system displays the most recent version of the data as the primary data field with a symbol to indicate a subordinate data field is available in memory. By selecting the symbol, the user may swap the primary and subordinate data fields.

  • Patent number: 5828944
Abstract: A signal receiving system has an antenna assembly divided into sectors. Each sector employs diversity by having at least two antennae for receiving signals from that sector. Signals from the antennae are passed to filters where the filters contain superconductors requiring cooling. The filters are housed in cryocoolers in a manner such that no cryocooler contains more than one filter receiving signals from a given sector. After filtering, the signals are sent to diversity receivers which combine or compare signals from antennae in the same sector.
